luke says cracker.

i can’t remember if i mentioned this here or on my family blog? but basically, i’ve been having a hard time deciding what his first word is/was. he says forms of "this", "that", "mom", "daddy", "yes", "hi" and "cat". but….they were never clear enough for anyone to understand them but me (even his daddy can’t hear half of them)….and he didn’t always use them correctly. he wasn’t always prompted by the thing itself…sometimes he’d just, say it for the sake of saying it.

previously, if i absolutely HAD to pick one of them to be his "first word" i would have said "this". he says it constantly when pointing to things (but ends up sounding like he’s saying shit….yes, it’s as hilarious as you might imagine). he goes through his days just pointing and pointing and saying this this this while he does it. i think the reason why i had a hard time accepting it as his first word is because i don’t remember really teaching it to him? we never specifically went over it and i know i wasn’t saying it a lot? i think maybe, the way he picked it up, is all the times we stood in front of the fridge waiting for his meals to be done (aka, distracting like crazy because as soon as he remembers he’s hungry he’s WILD) and we’d point to every magnet and picture and note and say "what’s this? what’s this?" followed by the answer.

however….he uses cracker better than any other previous word. and i mean that both phonetically, and symbolically. it’s hard to mistake what he’s saying. and he uses it either when he actually SEES a cracker, or even when he just simply wants one. he’ll look at me and say, "cracker?" and when he gets one after asking so nicely, he squeals in delight over the fact that he actually got what he wanted. there are even times when i have him on my hip and i’m sifting through the cupboards for something and he notices a box of crackers. he’s not even like, "brand loyal" in his recognition….he just, sees a box of crackers from a mile away! he notices the box and starts exclaiming "cracker! cracker!".

so why cracker? iiii don’t know. he doesn’t get them daily….or even every other day. but i’m wondering if, my mom feeding him graham crackers recently enhanced his excitement over them.

also, he has been iffy about signs. i think its one of those cases of mastering something and putting it aside for the sake of other skills that toddlers do. at first he took a straight up hiatus from them, clapping in frustration as a sign to mean everything, just to get my attention or emphasize his meaning. then he very enthusiastically started signing "milk" (correctly – we used to use that sign to say "baba" but switched it to milk pretty easily, actually!), and occasionally signing "more" and "all done". and now? he’s using them very subtlety (like he does them in very small gestures, almost in boredom) and is trying to say the words instead. i’m still using them every time we talk and i’m trying to introduce more of them….but he doesn’t seem to have any interest in doing them. he watches me do them, and you can see recognition on his face when i do them, but he refuses to mirror them. instead, he tries to repeat what i say (he does this all day long, and SO well, that sometimes you hear the EXACT word come out of his mouth – but he has no idea what he said, and he will never say it again unless he’s repeating you again). he’s become a little parrot.

he’s also mastered the fake laugh. in a very cheesy, over-the-top, so fake it’s almost real again, way. it’s probably my favorite thing he does these days.

well, i have a growing to-do list, and i’m suddenly getting an irrational panic about getting luke’s album caught up (no idea why), so i’m like….rushing to scrapbook between chores. weird. i mean not that the draw to paper craft is unusual for me…..but i’m kind of like, suddenly obsessive about catching up. whatever, i guess! i’m only to the point where….he’s 2 months old. ugh. i think i have 2-4 more layouts before easter (so about 4-6 more of him at this age) and then i’ll be onto 3 months. the point i’m at is about march of 2009…i’m determined to stay less than a year behind, and hopefully close the gap significantly. matt is supposed to give me a day where he plays #1 for luke and i’m just in the background for help so that i can scrap my heart out. we’ve had nothing but busy weekends lately (and this coming weekend is already booked up it seems. saturday we have brunch for matt’s mom’s birthday (delayed), and we’re going to get our bridesmaid dresses for mal’s wedding sunday). ugh, i’m dyin’!! i have to check on my spreadsheet on my laptop, but i’m pretty close to having 50 pages done. 50 pages…..and i’m only up to 2 months. oyeeee.
