The voice of a 6 year old man

I took another pregnancy test last night, Stephen said I was off for doing that.  I cant help it, Im just not feeling it.  Im almost feeling cheated out of my own pregnancy.  I WANT to feel something.  I NEED to feel something, for my own peace of mind.  I made Stephen go get his stethoscope to see if we could hear a heart beat.  Nothing……I suppose its too early for that.  Ugh, Im just being paranoid.

Last night my sisters husband was on the phone with our neighbor.  He had it on speakerphone so Stephen and I could hear.  It broke my heart into pieces.  This was a man, perfectly capable of most anything.  He had drive, determination, spirit and was just overall a great guy.  Anytime you saw him he always had a smile on his face, something witty/sarcastic to say and was always giving someone a hard time.  He would do anything he could for you.  He truly was a great guy.  Last night, the voice on the other end of the line wasn’t him, it was more like a 6 year old child.  His brain was without oxygen for awhile and he has suffered brain damage.  None of us were sure of the extent up until last night.  Stephen and I haven’t been to see him, my dad and sister saw him when it first happened, when he was still in a coma.  Last night he couldn’t complete a thought.  He was just blabbering.  He sounded so lost, so confused.  Billy asked if his son Lane had been to see him, he got confused, said no, then said yes.  Which lead to this big conversation about how many kids he has.  He kept saying all these odd numbers, 3 girls, 3 boys, 2 sons, etc etc.  In reality he has one son and 2 daughters.  It was so hard to listen to, so hard.  He even thought Billy was his son at one point.  He didn’t know where he lived, where we lived nothing.  Billy told him he lived in a yellow house, and Dennis said “I did?”  Ugh, so heartbreaking.  Made me realize he will never be the Dennis we knew.  Probably not even close to what we knew.  He said he was going to be home next week, I don’t know how true that is since he didn’t know much else, but if he is, I def. plan to go see him.  He will probably never race again, never play on his boat again, go fishing.  Well, maybe he can go fishing, with help, but not like he used to.  However, Billy did ask if he knew who River Rat was and he said yes and then Billy asked who and he said "Me" that brought a smile to my face.

I cant imagine what his family is going through.  How hard that has to be to deal with.  How frustrating it must get to answer the same questions over and over again and have him not remember what you just told him.  Then again, maybe they are just glad he is still with them.
