*****A weekend I soon hope to forget******E
Friday night Stephen and I met for dinner. Got a call from my sister saying dad was in an accident………in my front yard. He had ran into the light pole. When you are driving to my house at sunset the sun is VERY blinding. Ive been afraid I was going to end up in a tree or something. Anyways, we laughed at him and it was all funny. Friday was also his 51st birthday.
Saturday I ran the roads with my brother and sister, did some shopping etc. Stephen had a VFD thing he had to do. I got home around 5:30 ish and shortly after that Stephen was coming home. My sister and I heard a noise, she got up to look outside, and Stephen was in the same pole. He was actually looking for the pole so he wouldnt hit it.
So, dad busted up his front end and his radiator. Stephen just busted up his front end. Neither of them were going very fast.
When Stephen hit the pole the wires dropped down and the pole had a bit of a lean to it. So, I called the electric company. They came out, pulled one line back up and said he would put in a ticket to get the pole straightened. Stephen was mouthing off, I told him he needed to watch what he says. Basically the guy told us they were going to charge us around $1000 to have the pole moved and they might charge us between $700 and $1400 for hitting the pole because of the way I called it in. Apparently had I just said the lines had dropped it would have been fine, but since I said the pole was leaning and had been hit, they might charge us. Now, I dunno bout you, but in my mind, had I just said the wires were dropped, they would have come out and realized the pole was leaning and then would have found out it had been hit………so…..what difference does it make if I tell them upfront or they find out on their own?
Fast foward to about 10 that night….dad called……the neighbor had a heart attack. He was at a race, about 2 or 3 hours away, did his burn out and got lined up on the line, he set the first light and that was it…….he died, there on the line. They pulled him out of the car, he was already turning blue and had no pulse, they got him in the ambulance and took him to the nearest capable hospital, about an hour away. Hes been there ever since. He is unresponsive and unable to breathe on his own, they have determined that he has some brain damage but arent sure how much. Right now, they are saying things arent looking very well. They are giving him 72 hours from the time it happened to make some sort of progress…….he hasnt thus far. They arent sure if he is in a coma or what, his heart is beating on his own, but when they took him off the ventilator he couldnt breathe on his own. I talked to his wife briefly yesterday, she does not sound good at all, to be expected.
Saturday, after the news, I couldnt sleep. He was all I could think about. I wasnt that close to him, but we were neighbors for 11 years, I did hang out with him alot. I used to just go over to his house and sit around the shop while he worked on his car. I spent many nights in his shop with him and my dad. Hes a very good guy. The first day we moved into our house he was testing his car on the street and ended up in the ditch so dad had to help him get it out…….thats how we met him. Stephen and I went to a race a few weeks ago, he didnt actually race but did make a few passes. I had a dream, when I finally did get to sleep, that I called my parents house to see if they had any news, I knew in my dream that my dad had handed the phone to my neighbor. He answered it and said to me "Sisa-in law (inside thing) Im at your house crawling all around your yard" "Oh so youre ok?" "Yeah, everything is fine" "Oh my god, you have no idea how happy I am to hear that, I was so worried, Im so glad you are ok" Usually my bladder wakes me up between 6:15 and 6:45 on the weekends, because thats what time I get up during the week, my body is used to going then. I had that dream and then instantly woke up, because of my bladded, it was 6:55…….I laid back down but couldnt think of anything but him so I got up. Last night I found out that at 7 that morning he opened his eyes…..his wife was the only one in the room, he didnt respond to her, but he opened his eyes. Kinda crazy.
I’ve shed a few tears, in private. I really would love to see him pull through this. I know he will never be the same again if he does, but still….. My heart is breaking for his wife, 3 kids, grandson and mother. I cant imagine what they are going through and I never want to go through it myself. He is close to the same age his father was when he died of a heart attack. He wanted my dad to go to that race with him, but he didnt go. Apparently on the way out there he saw a hat and bought it for my dad saying "Thats for my buddy" His son gave it to my dad last night. Dennis pretty much was my dads best friend. Another neighbor friend went to the race with him, he said he was fine, wasnt saying he felt sick, or anything…….he said that for some reason Dennis set the transbrake on the car…..they heard the car rev up a few times and wondered why he didnt leave the line…….thats when they checked on him. We wonder if he knew something was wrong in that instant and set the transbreak so the car wouldnt go anywhere. Because, if he hadnt done that, and he started to seize (which we assume he did since the car kept revving up) then he could have ended up in the crowd or something. Maybe he was trying to protect others and himself.
I know I had a picture of him, somewhere, but I cant for the life of me find it today. So, here is what I do have……
Thats Dennis in the white shirt red hat a few weeks ago…….this is the car he was in this weekend.
His rat……..Dennis is known as "River Rat"
Front view of the car
This is him, his son and some friends after he won a race. Hes holding the money and his son Lane is the blonde on his left in the black shirt. Lane was there Saturday night when it all happened.
I know for a fact I have more pictures……..somewhere…….I know Ive taken more pictures at races………but I dunno where they are. I know I also have one of him in our backyard but I cant seem to find it…….I’ll keep looking.
Until then…….Dennis…..come home soon…..
*EDIT*
A picture I found on a website mentioning whats going on.

He’s in his 40s……not old at all. Some of the local racing websites are saying that he suffered NOS poisioning. Infact, someone says they spoke to someone close to Dennis so they believed him when they were told he suffered the poisioning but is doing OK. This is inaccurate information that they are putting out there…….Im tempted to post and tell them all the truth of whats going on. We’ve heard it……straight from his wife, daughter etc…..Im tempted to set the story straight. But, Dennis was never one to want his business broadcast…..he doesnt like for anyone to know it……so out of respect for him, Im keeping it to myself……I know better, I know the truth of whats going on…..and Im going to bite my tongue and hold it in.
My dad was supposed to make the trip to the hospital today.

Thats really sad. Hope his family is feelin ok. The first accident I had I hit a electric pole. They tried to charge me too. The pole I hit was leaning also..but I didn’t call it in. Somehow though…they never charged us. I think that’s ridiculous to charge someone that much for something that was an accident!
Warning Comment
I’m so sorry. I really hope Dennis hangs on. It’s so scary, especially since you JUST posted pics last week and the same thing happened with your dog. Go visit him and keep his family strong. They must be a total mess right now! *hugs*
