My little Annie May

So my darling middle child, who will be 3 in March, is Autistic.

This isn’t a surprise, I’ve known for at least a year that she isn’t quite the same as other children. It was surprising how much of a release and affirmation the diagnosis was.

I hope and expect that she will be reasonably high functioning autistic. She is a clever wee girl, though she remains non verbal. She is very loving and sweet and cuddly. She seems to be happy and contented most of the time. At this stage we are just working on working through the communication barrier, getting her potty trained, and working on her socialisation.

When I say “we”, I mean myself, her father, her speech therapist, her early intervention teacher, her neurodevelopmental therapist, her head teacher at kindy, and her assigned teacher at preschool. Her aunt is also a huge support to me, as well as my mother in law. Yes, we are circling the wagons to do the best for my sweet girl, and I couldn’t be more affected or grateful. It’s been a very, very emotional day for me. I am so blessed to have such a team for my daughter, and so very hopeful that we can make a difference in her life! Early intervention can help so much, I pray it makes a difference for my Annabelle.

I just caught your most recent entry on the front page and came back to read this one. Yes yes yes, early intervention is SO important and can make such a huge difference, it’s really wonderful that you’ve been aware and have so much help in place for her already. Also, never give up on her verbal capability; my daughter had said one word in her six years, and now she talks so much!

I have two on the spectrum and I wish they’d caught it sooner (it was always that they were just a bit behind, or it was a speech problem, etc) but good support can help at any age. I’m part of an autism support group and I’ve seen what the EI has done for the other kids. So glad to see a parent who’s so accepting of it and ready to dig right in. That makes me smile 🙂
