Should I stay or should I go
– Clash
It is getting to the point with this job where I am starting to wonder how much longer I can do this. There is nothing wrong with the job as such, especially if you are a mindless monkey who can cut and paste, but for an intelligent woman this is soul breaking work. The bordem is killing me.
Basically all I am meant to do for 8 hours a day is to:
- Cut and paste emails into client files on a data base
- Occasionally I will be given a resume and a set of answered questions. I have to cut and past the resume onto a cover sheet, remove the contact details and then put the answers to the questions into something readable
- Occasionally Click a button and print invoice requests
- Occasionally put html code into ads and then ut them on the internet
- Occasionally start a new client record.
- Occasionally do a reference check
- Occasionally email a client or candidate and ask them something
- Cut and paste any of the above into the data base once I have done it.
Basically what I am doing is basic data entry.
The other problem is there really isn’t enough work to keep me busy. I spend a lot of time at the moment doing jigsaws at http://www.jigzone.com I have now done all of the jigsaws there in the 67 piece classic cut, the 80 piece classic cut and I am now working on the 100 piece classic cut.
When I am not doing jigsaws I am checking OD 50 times a day. Seriouly the excitement that I feel when one of you updates and I have something different to read for 5 minutes, it is immesurable! A lot of the time I am the first note on a diary and considering a lot of my favs live in very different time zones to me that is pretty amazing!
I am also very up to date with all my friends LF friends.
At the moment I am getting paid 35k a year to do all of this. So I guess my question is, do I get paid 35k a year to sit on my ass and do nothing and feel like i am going insane, or do I quit and find a job that maybe doesn’t pay as much but keeps me amused during the day. This job is pretty much stress free, but the bordem is a real kicker.
What I really want is a job I love. I keep saying this I know and I still don’t know what I would love to do. I actually have applied for some help desk work simply bedcause it would be something completely differnt and they would teach me about ISP stuff and I thought maybe learning something new might inspire me and motivate me a bit.
I just hate waking upof a morning and spending the first 30 seconds thinking if I can find a good enough excuse to call in sick or not turn up. I was 15 minutes late today and I didn’t bat an eyelash when I walked in and didn’t appologise for being late. For me that is unheard of. Normally I am half an hour early and if I am going to be late in even by 5 minutes I call and let them know. I really just don’t give a shit in this job and that’s not a place I like being at.
So – should I stay or should I go?
Just another little piece of me…..

Having a job like that is no fun. If it were me, I’d be looking for something a bit more fulfilling.

You should go. I’ve been in your situation before – days filled with mind-numbing boredom that drag on and on. Now, I’m in the opposite situation: my days are too busy. But at least they fly by. Life is too short to settle for anything. Remember that – it’s my new mantra.

what a hard decision you have before you… because what you need do is find a job to go into before finishing this one. I see you need to be kept busy- & it sucks that your job doesn’t satisfy your needs… I hope you find one to change too. *hugs*

ryn: See, truth is, I’m having this baby for you. I know how much you want one but don’t want to go through the hassle. I’m a good friend like that. LOL!

That was part of why I left my last job.. boredom. BTW – that jigsaw thing just sucked away about a half hour of my life. Too fun. ^__^

I started a new job (having been more or less a stay at home mom for 18 years) last month and it sounds very like what you are doing. Mind boringly numb stuff, the only good part is the girl I work with is great craic so we have some good laughs. I only work tue, wed and thurs, I’m not sure I could handle 5 days! 😉

I don’t have any advice. I’m hoping for a job I can merely tolerate when the “baby” goes to school here.
