First Day of School

Courtney and Rebecca started school today, and Benjamin started his new daycare. Here’s a picture of them all:

I never got Benjamin’s hair cut and it was so crazy this morning, the girls were calling him Flamingo Head! You can kind of see his hair sticking up in the back.

It sounds like everything went well with them all; I get tired just thinking that school has started again. Whew. The killer is David’s night classes, it has been so nice these past few months with him not having any night classes.

The claim for my car has still not been settled. I think I did a dumb thing. I guess I can be excused for not knowing what to do since I’ve never had a car accident — well, not since I was 20 and my parents took care of it. (I was rear-ended, clearly the other person’s fault). After the little fender-bender I had on vacation, I called my insurance company and filed a claim. It was only when the guy started talking about subrogation that I started to think, wait a minute. I know what subrogation is. Actuarial exams come in handy! Subrogation is when an insurance company tries to recover money from another insurance company. As in, even though my insurance company agrees the other driver is at fault, they (and thus me, because of the deductible) would pay for the repairs first then get our money back from the other company. That didn’t sound too appealing to me, like I want to front my $500 deductible! So I asked the guy what to do, and he said I could file a claim with the other driver’s insurance company. That honestly never crossed my mind. So I have done that. The estimate is $1,200 to fix the car. My insurance called me today and said they have concluded their investigation of the claim and assigned the other driver 100% liability since she has never returned any of their calls. I know that her company is also waiting for a statement from her. I’m just waiting for my $$. I just wish I’d never filed a claim with my company, I’m afraid they will use it against me even though they closed it with me not being at fault.

Things I learned:

  • Get the name of the other person’s insurance company, not just the agency or brokerage.
  • Make a note of WHAT KIND OF CAR they are driving (duh!!)
  • Get their phone number (duh again).

My mom used to tell me I was kind of dumb for a smart person. Sometimes I think she is right.

Pepper is laying here grooming herself like a cat. She is a weirdo sometimes.

Hey thank you for your comments on my photo’s. Yea, Gary looked pretty rough! Glad we just drove through! I hope things go well with your wreck. I had an accident when I was 18, totaled my car. It was my fault..but thankfully no one else was involved it was more of an off the road accident. Make sure you are cautious about the insurance company, they’re sneaky!

I would have had no idea what Subrogation meant. I’m glad you are getting it all straightened out. I think in MN you have to file it with your own insurance….we are a no-fault state. Good luck to the girls on the new school year and I hope Ben likes his new day care.
