Lasik experience

Well I went thru with the Lasik last week and I can see pretty well.  Or at least as well as with my contacts in.  I actually thought my vision would be alot more crisp and clear and maybe I will ask again on Friday when I go back.  It still seems a bit blurred at times and is extremely dry.  When I wore contacts I hated wearing them because my eyes would get so dry.  I haven’t really worn contacts at all in about 10 years.  If I did it was in the summer and for a day here or there.  Because they were so uncomfortable.  Well yesterday I got home from work and couldn’t stand it anymore.  I called the eye doctor and asked him what to do. I was pouring drops in my eyes the whole day and just couldn’t get them to stay moist.  It took my two hours yesterday afternoon to get them feeling ok.

He told me to try a new drop it is like a gel.  I thought what the heck, but I just got back from work and tried it and I don’t have that nasty dry feeling although it doesn’t feel perfect either but better than it was this morning.  I was walking around Walmart all morning just dying and blinking because my eyes were so darn dry I couldnt’ stand it.  Maybe it’s dry in there but I am hoping like heck these new drops work.  At least before I could take my contacts out and it would get better.  This time no such luck.

Anyway the experience was pretty cool.  First off there is absolutely no pain whatsoever.  At least that I felt.  Your eyes are pretty numb from all the drops they put in before hand.  I laid on the bed and they taped, yes taped my eye lashes down.  I was like you aren’t going to rip them all off are you.  I need those.  It was that really sticky take too.  I don’t think I lost any eyelashes.  Then they clamp your eye open so you don’t blink or move.  The laser is set up so that if you don’t concentrate of the moving lights or move your eyes in any other direction it shuts off.  There was only a time for about 10 seconds where the Dr. said don’t move, don’t move. I think that was the cutting part because I could smell the burning.

Then they move you over to another machine that does the correction, can’t remember what it was called.  That didn’t take too long at all either.  They move you back and then I could see the tools they were using to smooth back the flap.  It was like looking up at the bottom of a pool.  The Dr. was using some type of tools that was flattening out the lense.  All along I did not feel anything.  Maybe a little pressure when they put this suction thing on your eye.  I think to pull the lense up.  I felt it more on one side than the other.  It seemed like the first eye took forever because I knew they were going to do the other eye.  But the 2nd eye flew by.  I think I was in there maybe 10 minutes.

The first thing I remember when sitting up is seeing the clock from where I was sitting.  I saw it pretty good, but it was really foggy.  Almost like a dream.  I did take the Valuim which really only relaxed me.  So you pretty much walk out of there seeing, but not the best.  They want you to go home and take a 4 hour nap and keep your eyes closed.  Right before I left there I could start to feel the numbing coming off.  It was strange but really not that painful.  I thought it would get worse when I got home. I got home and tried to sleep but couldn’t.  I did lay there with my eyes closed because it hurt to open them and they were teary.  When I say hurt I would say on a scale of 1-10 the pain never got more than a 2.  It was bearable and I probably could have taken tylenol but never really thought about it.

When I woke up the next day I could see pretty well.  My eyes felt good and I thought I could see a little bit better but it was still good.  When I went to the eye doctor my vision was 20/20.  I will take that.

I just need to get this dryness figured out and get on top of it.  When I talked to the Dr. yesterday he said that if worse come to worse we could put some eye plugs in my tear ducts to see if that helps.  I have had those before and they scratch my eyes.  But he said they have something new and that they are made of collegen now.  So I will try everything else first and then move on to the plugs if worse comes to worse.

So that was my experience it was a pretty good one so far and if I can get the dryness under control I will be a happy camper.  I have heard that alot of people suffer from dry eyes after lasik and it is just one of those things.  I have been using Restaisis for a month now and will use it for three months afterwards and they say that is supposed to help.  We will see.  Right now my eyes feel pretty good, so I am hoping to try anything to get some relief from the dryness.  Let’s hope this is it.  Those drops are like vaseline when you put them in, i mixed some other eye drops with it so I hope that was ok.  Let’s see now long it lasts.

Time for more drops of the medicine drops.  Hope it doesn’t dry things out.

It’s nice to have a new president in office.  I am usually very scared when we get a new president. This time I feel much more comfortable and feel Mr. Obama will do a wonderful job for us.  Let’s all hope and pray he does.  What other bad things will happen to this country?  It will be a scarey year.  Can it get any worse?  Let’s hope not.

Happy New Year in case I forgot.

I’ve thought about Lasik. I can’t wear my contacts any more (after menopause) because of the dryness, but I don’t want to do it if the dryness is going to be worse. I guess I’ll just have to talk to my doc and see what she says. Thanks for the info about your experience.

my husband had LASIK and swears by it. He could see clearly right away. I am more apprehensive of our new leader.

My sister in-law had eye surgery & ended up with very dry eyes too. It’s a year later now & she is feeling better Most of the time. I hope you get relief soon, it is still early in your recovery too so there’s good reason to believe it will get better as you heal. Prayers up for you to heal, comfortably fast. Prayers also offered up for President Obama to make the best decisions to propel our country in a positive direction again.
