I Miss You Guys (And We Went on Vacation)*
So, we’ve been busy…
Instagram basically documented almost every moment of our vacation/trip out to see Nathan… so much easier to grab the cell phone out of my purse instead of lugging around the "big" camera, although I did take a few pictures with that, too. It just seems that more "real life" happens in the moment and these pictures reflect that (and I have so much more to share!)
What happened was, Instead of harvesting, the crew ended up with a break between jobs. (Finished wheat in Kansas, the stuff in South Dakota isn’t ready yet)… basically that meant we had 2 weeks to do whatever we wanted! And with a camper, we could basically go wherever we wanted, and since we still wanted to be on route to our next destination, we ended up in the Black Hills of South Dakota. It was absolutely gorgeous and, as you can see, there are ELEVENTY MILLION THINGS TO DO AND SEE! Totally fun, totally kid and family friendly, the weather is fantastic (no humidity! no bugs!) and we even got to see Mount Rushmore!
I have so much to write about… the good AND the bad. (Mostly good, but we had some pretty major issues with Wesley along the way misbehaving due to him being a 3-year-old totally off his schedule, eating mostly marshmallows and potato chips and also in a different time zone and bedtime routine out the window… cue complete and total MELTDOWN at times. Ugh.)
I’ll have to save all that for later, though, as it’s getting pretty late and we technically still are on our trip. We’ve driven most of the way home considering where we came from, but still have about 5 or 6 hour drive tomorrow and we will finally be home sweet home. As much as I loved being in South Dakota, there is a part of me that is totally ready to be back in our own beds and back on a ROUTINE.
Tonight we tried to go out to dinner and ended up taking our food and our screaming 3-year-old to go.
Definitely a sure sign that all good things come to an end, right!?
I promise, I’ll write more soon… I’ve got so much to spill it’s just all bottled up inside right now and driving me crazy. I miss you guys and I need an OD fix soon!
*EDIT: So I guess I took that last sentence literally…. I got up with the kids around 4AM when Wesley woke up because he wanted some water and then whined about something or other and woke Jasper up (I AM SO READY FOR THEM TO BE IN THEIR OWN ROOMS AGAIN) and by the time I got them both back to sleep I was wide awake and I decided to pop on the computer really quick.
And now it is 6AM and I have been on the last two hours catching up on OD.
I read a few things that talked about the end of this place again and I decided to back up my diary. I’m so sad/scared if it will really happen. There truly is nothing else in the world like OD. Just in case, though, I started an account at Prosebox. I haven’t written anything, but just wanted to secure my username and have it ready "just in case". No matter what happens or where I go, I’ll always be MissMeg! 🙂
Again, when I have more time I want to write more in detail about our setback with Wesley… I was reading some entries from last year at this time and it seems we had a similar problem. Taking him away from home and living on the road in the camper tends to make things crazy for him. I hope once we get home later today and back into a routine and familiar surroundings he will settle back down.
I’m ready for my sweet happy boy back–I know he’s in there somewhere!
Aside from Mt.Rushmore, where else did you go in SD? Did you go to Wall or Hill City or Keystone? I haven’t spent much time west river, even though I’ve lived in S. Dak. my whole life.

It looks from the pics, a lot of family fun!

I have been following you religiously on Instagram. What a beautiful, sunny, joyous, colourful holiday you’ve had! I can’t wait to read all about it when you’ve got time to put it in words.

I know it’s hard for Celia with just ONE DAY of a messed up schedule, so I can’t imagine a week or two. I’m betting Wesley can’t wait to get back into his own bed, either! I’m glad you had a nice trip. I love the photo collage 🙂

What is your Instagram name? I haven’t heard about this place going down but I’ve read you for years and love your pictures.

I really am scared that OD will go down again. I’ve added most of my favs on FB though so we can stay connected. Your trip sounded amazing, I had no idea SD had so many things to offer. We’ll have to look into that sometime. This summer, we’re checking out TN and KY.

I love that place – we went on a big family road trip about 10 years ago (I can’t believe it was that long ago!). Did you go to Deadwood? Wall Drug? Did you drive through the Badlands at all? We also saw Mt. Rushmore/Keystone, and I think we went to a Mammoth dig somewhere in the areas as well. It’s a fun area! Luke definitely has his days. I hope Wes is calming down, but I’m glad I’m not the only one!

Oh, and the Corn Palace, heh! I think that is also in SD, I just don’t remember where. Yeah, we’re that family that stops at all the crazy places 🙂 We even stopped at one of the Mystery Spots (mostly for my sister, who was about 8 at the time).

I agree that there is nothing else in the world like OD. But, just in case, I went ahead & started an account on Prosebox. I would hate to lose touch with all my OD faves if something happens here.

Welcome home, love! I’m so stoked you had such a brilliant adventure, minus the meltdowns.

Love the pictures! Traveling is rough on kids. Routine is so comforting! Hope he readjusts soon!

You are the second person to mention prosebox this week. I am not ready to think of the demise of OD yet, but prosebox does look rather familier, so I will keep an eye on it. Hope you settled back in at home after your holiday! Take care,
