KURT VONNEGUT and PETER MATTHIESSEN
TO JUDGE CONTESTS, MEET WITH WINNERS!!!
There are Two Other Ways to Meet the Authors!
Kurt Vonnegut and Peter Matthiessen are the final judges of two unique fiction and non-fiction contests, respectively.
The First Place winners of both contests will receive a free stay in the Hamptons in mid-August, and will personally meet Vonnegut and Matthiessen over drinks at Mr. Vonnegut’s 350 year-old “salt-box” home. The winners will be given autographed books by the authors. The winners may also choose to receive $500 instead of the Hamptons trip.
Both Second Place Winners receive their choice of autographed books and a 3-day stay at the The Mountain Mews Bed and Breakfast in Asheville, NC – or $250 cash.
Third Place Winners receive $150 and an autographed book.
Ten Honorable Mentions will be announced for each contest.
Each contest entry will receive feedback from the reader, as usual.
The contests are sponsored by The Writers’ Workshop, a literary center based in Asheville, NC since 1985. Vonnegut and Matthiessen serve on the Advisory Board, along with John Le Carre, E.L. Doctorow, Helen Henslee and Reynolds Price. Eudora Welty and Alex Haley were past members.

RYN: there is no denying the majority of Torontonians are not very environmentally aware and use cars and air conditioners too much. However, I was smiling at your comment about having clean air where you live. Apparently due to air currents, we end up with a lot of the pollution from upstate New York — in fact they say it accounts for about 60% of our smog here in Toronto.

Sounds like a cool contest — lucky winners! I would love to meet Kurt Vonnegut.

RYN: all I know is I read a statistic that 60% of the pollution in Southern Ontario drifted here from industry and coal-fired power stations in the U.S. Statistics, of course, can be skewed. And I am definitely not saying that there is no blame on Ontario’s part. Commuters from the burbs into Toronto really piss me off, jamming the highways with their gas guzzlers — on person per car.
