Ghosts of Vacations Past
In six days, I’ll be traveling through the starkness and haze of a country landscape that reminds me very much of the movie Jeepers Creepers, en route to Ocean City. I take an annual trip in the off-season when the town is practically deserted. In summer, it takes about an hour to drive a mile-long stretch of road, there is no walking space anywhere that doesn’t involve rubbing up against someone else’s damp sweaty shoulders or other body parts, and an average standard-sized hotel room runs about $350 per night. When I wait a couple of months and vacation there mid-autumn, the near solitude and chilly beach landscape is quite romantic, and the hotel rooms normally run between $45 and $60 per night. I got mine for $51 per night this year, with an indoor pool. I’m greatly looking forward to going.
