Another School Year Beginneth
It is appropriate the mascot of my new High School is the Phoenix, for I am rising from the spiritual ashes of burnout! My new school district is the most professional district in which I’ve taught. The well-oiled machine cliché definitely applies. My school’s staff is friendly and sublimely competent! My class load is Symphonic Band (varsity), Concert Band (non-varsity), Beginning Band, Music Theory 1, and Music Appreciation. My beginning class has actually produced some fine young musicians in the past, so I feel fortunate to have it. Ninety-minute class periods and these students’ intellect allow the kids to make up for lost time in middle school. My top band has pretty balanced instrumentation and some good players, although I don’t think an Honor Band is in my near future. Right now I am content with making music for music’s sake.
My colleagues in the choir and orchestra have been very supportive, and like me, are teaching their students to be musicians first before band, choir, or orchestra members. Of course, the best part is not getting on a school bus on Friday night to follow a football team around! However, I am judging a marching contest in October, but at least I am getting well-paid for that event.
Hey, that sounds wonderful! Especially the no football games part!!

our band only played at home games and sometimes a lot of the band was on the football field.

I’m so glad things are better at your new job! I know how toiling away at a job that you hate can wear you down, so it’s definitely awesome that you found a better place to work. I always loved marching season, but I imagine it’s probably not as much fun for the band director as it is for the students. ;-P

You’re about 10 years younger than I, so your experience in marching band was probably really different. Here were our cool marching songs: The Horse, Get It On, 25-or-624, Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho–oh man, playing French horn in marching band was no fun, but if I had practiced, it would have been better. I bet it’s all 6 steps for every 5 yards now all the time, rather than 8 to 5, as most of our routines were.
