The Safe At Home Affair, Act I

Elaine Campbell, Enforcement Agent, Section 2, Number 18, United Network Command for Law and Enforcement (UNCLE), slipped into the ladies restroom just past passport control in Narita Airport. She quickly moved to the second to last stall and securely locked the door. A duffel was crammed behind the commode. Her flight had been late, and the line for non-Japanese citizens unexpectedly long; she had just 15 minutes to change clothes.

Elaine was coming off the very successful Osmium Antidote Affair. She had impersonated Ana Ivanova Graminska, the famous Russian genetic engineer, at a Chinese biowarfare research center. She had successfully determined the extent of the Chinese program and smuggled out photos, names, and genetic codes of the chimera viruses they were developing.

Quickly she yanked off the Balkan Red wig and bright headscarf she wore, her own plum colored hair fell down about her shoulders. The garish red leather skirt and clunky amber jewelry typical of the former Soviet Bloc followed the wig into a trash bag. Elaine slipped into black jeans and a tight top that bared her midriff. Baby wipes removed the hideously thick makeup, but could do nothing for the perfume. She crammed the trash bag under the commode. She had been in there long enough for anyone who’d seen her go in to have long gone.

Elaine stepped out of the stall and washed her hands slowly. The cleaning lady caught her eye and nodded before leaving the restroom. Elaine walked over to the paper towel dispenser and popped it open. Inside was a plastic baggie with a new passport and credit cards. She pulled it out and replaced it with her old documents and the evidence from her previous affair.

Elaine nodded to the cleaning lady standing outside the restroom as she went on her way. She made way back to the doors that deposited international travelers in the center of Narita Airport and joined the gaggle of excited family and friends waiting there. She had three minutes to spare.
