A Vessel

Bursting, like coming
to the surface for oxygen,
my veins
continue to tangle and confuse
themselves until I am nothing
but a vessel for their
chaos.

I can hear your voice
snapping like a snake’s teeth
and I am filled with a
shame I never wanted to
own,
or forget.

Your absence is the
salt that crowds
into the fissures of
my heart as it
collapses, trying
to forget that
light in
your eyes.

You are the
door that struggles
to not fly off
of its
hinges.

I am
catapulted into
this future;
I cannot
leave these
memories behind.

Don’t go, please.

amanda.
