American Idol: As I Heard It! Final Two
Adam — Mad World — Nicely done. Yes, the presentation was dramatic but when you look in the dictionary under Drama, isn’t Adam’s picture there? This didn’t hold the surprise that it did the first time he performed it. I still think he peaked 2 weeks too quickly.
Kris — Ain’t No Sunshine — I’d forgotten about him doing this. Very nice, except for that last note. I liked it a lot. He taps that emotional space quietly while Adam tries to break into it with a sledge hammer.
Paula has a little too much self-tanner on tonight.
Adam — Change Is Gonna Come — I think if he dropped all that musical theater drama, he might have been able to deliver a heartfelt performance but he just can’t break through the plastic for me anymore. Give me the thoughtfulness of Sam Cook. This was such an important song in the early 60s — I don’t know.
Kris — What’s Going On — A great song, but I’m not crazy about this rendition of it. No, in fact, I hated his rendition of it.
Adam — Kara Song — Why must they always come up with the inspirational song for the winner? I HATE inspirational songs — they’re too damn sappy. I didn’t care for this performance but I don’t know if it’s Adam’s fault — it may be the song’s fault. Yay, Simon, for ragging on the song.
Kris — repeat of the same crappy Kara Song — It’s kind of awkward song, isn’t it. I liked his version of the chorus better. And there are way too many words. I think the crappy song suits Kris’ style more than Adams, but it’s still a crappy, sappy song.
So there we have it. I’m not sure what to think. As I’ve said before, Adam peaked for me about 2 weeks ago and now I’m really tired of his look, his overwrought renditions of every song. So I’d like to see Kris win. Not enough to pick up the phone though. Either way, they’ll both get their record deals.
