Obnoxious early Christmas stuff
Uh huh. Yeah, I know: It isn’t even Thanksgiving yet!!! Oh well; as I am already happily listening to lots of happy stuff, I thought I would share my playlist with you. Ready? Good. Here it is:
1. Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli, “The Prayer”
I like this version; it is really mature and full.
2. Anne Murray, “O Holy Night”
One of my favorite Christmas hymns sung by a favorite singer. One of the reasons she is a favorite of mine is that she makes me believe I can sing along with her. If it weren’t for her I could never even attempt to sing “O Holy Night.”
3. Billy Gilman, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”
It’s a fun song, and I love his boy soprano voice rocking!
4. Melissa Etheridge, “So This Is Christmas”
Very raw and strong version of a pretty fine seasonal song.
5. Charlotte Church and Billy Gilman, “Dream a Dream (Elysium)”
Sweet and beautiful song, sweet and beautiful combination of voices.
6. The Pogues, “Fairytale of New York”
A great deal of personal meaning in this that I won’t go into here, but it has become an important part of my Christmas music.
7. Charlotte Church, “Silent Night”
Purity.
8. Loreena McKennitt, “Coventry Carol”
This is such a beautiful medieval carol; I love it; and her voice is very rich, it’s like listening to a tapestry.
9. Billy Gilman, “Jingle Bell Rock”
See 3.
10. James Taylor, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”
A longtime favorite song; Mr. Taylor gives it jazz and maturity and warmth.
11. John Lennon, “So This Is Christmas”
Well, come on, he wrote the song. Also, I absolutely adore when Yoko joins in on the chorus with the kids; her voice sounds a little shaky and trembly and vulnerable, and I really love that.
12. Frank Sinatra and Cyndi Lauper, “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town”
Just adorable. I am a bigger fan of hers than of his, but the combination is … adorable.
13. Billy Gilman, “O Holy Night”
A favorite hymn sung by a beautiful boy soprano. The only thing missing is choir robes and candles glowing on an altar.
14. Celine Dion, “Ave Maria”
I really love this song, and her singing it.
15. Billy Gilman, “One Voice”
Not a Christmas song. I think it should be.
16. The Rankins, “Angels We Have Heard on High”
A very recent discovery, with thanks to Kalestra~Mistry over at her Eastern One Tales website; sweet glorious voices that just seem so right for this beautiful carol.
17. The Roches, “Hallelujah Chorus”
Probably my all time favorite Christmas recording, ever. Three women, singing a cappella, do the entire thing. Stunning; amazing; beautiful.
There you are. We bought our Thanksgiving dinner groceries yesterday. Yippeeeeee!!! Happy Monday.
I LOVE your list! One of my favorite songs is “Do They Know Its Christmas”…I cry every time…I also love the Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers Christmas album…yup had it in album form, then cassette, now CD. :o) I watch your Macy’s parade every year and my g/f & I then watch “Its a Wonderful Life” in celebration of your Thanksgiving. When Anne Murray started her career, she would appear on the stage barefoot. She is one of my all time favorite singers..she is from a small town in Nova Scotia, and so am I. I can’t listen to Christmas music without bawling. Life story. I am really dreading it this year. Happy Thanksgiving!

Nice list! : ) I refuse to do Christmas until after Thanksgiving. Our gratitude tree sort of ties the holidays together for us. Glad you enjoy the music so much. We have some grocery shopping to do tomorrow for Thanksgiving. RYN I’ll see if I can slip you a piece of that chocolate pecan pie ; ) Hugs

How happy you are! Do you go skating at Rockefeller Center too? NYC at Christmas is pretty magical… (I can take Celine Dion if I don’t have to look at her)

RYN: lol I must have skipped over song 9, but then again I always read your entry first in the morning.. and that happens with in minutes of getting up.. so go figure on me missing something or not reading something exactly right.. lol

I used to love Karen Carpenter singing “Merry Christmas, Darling,” though everytime I hear it now I think of Kevin and it makes me cry. I still like the song though. Great list; there’s some wonderful songs there. Have you ever heard the Peter Paul and Mary Christmas album? some great songs there, that really capture the feeling of Christmas. 🙂

Hee hee – Rick and I are on the same wave length! Loved that Carpenters song and your playlist. I’ve had soothing Celtic music playing here in my office all morning. Not sure if I’m up to Christmas music yet!

Have a fabulous Thanksgiving, my dear friend. You are one of those I give thanks for. Cathy, I’m going to be gone from OD, at least for awhile. I can’t take being the center of controversy, and I cannot fully defend myself on the Gemma diary without violating what I hold to be dear. I wish you well and thank you for being a friend.
