Meet the Parents!
And brothers. Okay, three out of four brothers, but still ….
This occurred yesterday. It was a sort of impromptu thing; we just kind of got in the car and headed on down there. Gulp.
The brothers were grand. The parents are lovely. Kay’s mom and I got along quite well, I believe. Kay’s father was polite, but he and his daughter have a lot in common methinks. He was rather quiet, and probably is reserving judgment for the time being. The brothers were all quite funny and welcoming and down to earth.
The home in which they all live is so beautiful. Kay’s father and second oldest brother built it. Okay, there was a general contractor involved too, but … wow. There was no garage when we got there as Father had decided that his current project needed to be rebuilding that. Turns out it was a very good thing he did, as there were weaknesses in the former edifice. It is good that there are three sons living at home these days, well trained sons who know that weekends are for working on various things that need to be done around the home and property.
Oh: We picked tomatoes and jalapeno peppers (jp for Eman, he likes such things) straight from where they grow! I saw bell peppers that were attached to stalks and leaves! Just so you know, they actually grow out of the ground; I thought they were found in heaps in Pathmark, except for the really fine kind that are frequently placed in pairs on styrofoam trays and wrapped in plastic. I am here to report for the Urban Citizen Times that actually they can be found growing in well tended gardens. Not ready for us to take yet were zucchinis and yellow squashes!!! Who knew?
The grounds near the house are stunningly landscaped with gorgeous flora and low stone walls. There are beautiful woods on all sides, which I look forward to walking in once buggy season has passed. Kay and I, being sort of interlopers, volunteered to earn our supper by going to Outback Steakhouse and picking up everyone’s orders. (Yep, that was dinner yesterday evening!) Kay’s mother, father, second eldest brother (and the oldest brother at home), and the two of us ate in the really lovely sun room. Kay is going to google ottoman as a result of a show that involved the Ottoman Empire; one fellow had on head gear that looked like a foot rest. Ahem.
I learned that one really does need to have a light on or with one, even if one would swear complete familiarity with the lay of the property. I did not learn this through personal experience; I took notes as a result of Kay’s experience. That’s all I shall say on that topic.
The drive home went much faster than the ride there. Full and much more relaxed women might have had something to do with that. I really like Kay’s family. In turn, I believe they know that I won’t scare off any family friends or relations. As for anything else they might have thought or be thinking, well … that’s not for me to know. It was a comfortable evening, and I am most happy about that.
Meanwhile, back at the bungalow, the most amazing things are happening! I am actually in awe of what I feel growing there, within each of us, and between us. It brings about in me a different facet of faith, different visions for the future, different understandings of how and who I am meant to be and am becoming. Significant changes. I expect those will become more apparent in this diary as time passes.
Oh: we watched “As Good As It Gets,” which I somehow had never seen before. Wow. Just … wow. Lots of wow. Brilliant.
Nigel might just be coming up here to spend his birthday weekend. Kay and Nigel are already fast friends. She is so good to and for him; and I do believe that he is, in his own interesting way, good to and for her as well. He tried very hard to convince each of us, Kay and me, that he was fully welcome to come up this weekend, but we caught on pretty quickly to his plot. And decided that two weeks from today, when he is 13, would be the right time for his first visit to this part of Connecticut.
Oh, and in case anyone out there needs this information: He wants clothes for his birthday. Chatting with Kay in AIM, he typed that he wants “close” but hey … not too hard to translate, as the option given among others was “clothes” and for some reason yoots seem to feel that chatting requires a complete lack of spelling (I think it’s considered an adventure in cryptography or something: figure out what I have typed, sound it out …).
I snorked in my sleep last night. Apparently I somehow wound up on my back at some point, and when I do this, the noise is sort of like an outboard motor. Oh the things I learn!
Have a grand day. I am off to my next cup of coffee. Kay is sleeping (she had a rough night with a snorking comforter-stealing sort of woman sharing her bed, so she needs to get her sleeping done while said woman is out of the bed and not interrupting her rest).
this was great, so full of life and love. and this was very funny… Okay, there was a general contractor involved too, but … wow hee.

My uncle grows his own bell peppers. Also, tomatoes, jalapenos and a few kinds of squash. Perhaps some beans, too, when he has the time, which he has not, recently. Enjoy your coffee and your weekend. 🙂

🙂 sounds wonderful. I used to grow bell peppers too – they were my favourite and they taste so much better from the garden. I must try that again sometime… perhaps when I actually live in the same country all the time. Glad you had a great weekend.

I love reading about the growth of you. so much beauty to what you’re experiencing. you’re opening up your arms and mind and heart and taking it all in. I’m impressed. my Girl rolls her eyes when we are chatting online and I don’t know what her abbreviations mean. She hates misspellings (though she makes them a-plenty). I snored much of the night, but nobody cared since I’m aloooooonnnneeeee! wheeeeee!
