Hair Today, Gone on Thursday EDIT
Funny, how life always has the last word on everything. After all the emotion & the thinking and re-thinking about my conversations with my friend regarding the flea market issue, it rained and none of us went. Figures.
Ive decided to try a new hairdo. Not unusual for me but it always seems like when I do that it gradually morphs right back into the same ol hairdo in time. Maybe thats just what my hair wants to do naturally, I dont know. This time though Im going to be brave and try out a radical hair color process. Before my mid twenties, I had dark brown hair. I really never liked it. Then I started going grey, probably around 25 years old. I tried dying my hair dark brown but it looked more like shoe polish. I really didnt want grey hair but the brown just wasnt working. I could still see the grey and there wasnt any shine to it. Then I began trying out a few blondish highlights. That worked wonderfully well, easy, covered/disguised the grey and with little upkeep. As the years progressed, so did the grey hair. In time, I was almost completely blonde, still trying to disguise the grey, which had multiplied greatly. Soon, I was almost completely grey; therefore, completely blonde. I dont like much in upkeep. The less, the better.
Im lucky that blond looks good on me but there were times when I wished I had my own dark hair back. Ive often worn dark wigs for Halloween parties and received many, many compliments. I wasnt surprised because I figured God knew best when he gave me my hair and my Italian coloring. Unfortunately, he didnt give me anything to keep the grey from popping up. Ive tried gradually going back to brown hair, then I tried abruptly going back to brown and although both looked great, it lasts about 1 week. Very soon, Id need a touch up for all those grey hairs as my hair grows very fast. Also, color fades very fast on grey hair. So it wasnt long before I was light brown-haired, which really did nothing for me. All of me soon looked faded, hair, face, etc.
So I found a hairdo that is dark brown on the underside and pale blonde ( like I am now) on top of that in a mid length bob style. Its pretty dramatic and radical but kind of neat at the same time and would accomplish everything I would like all at once. Being a rather conservative person, I was somewhat undecided if I should do it. Then I remembered that now Im an Artist!! I can look weird/strange/different if I want. Everyone knows artists are strange creatures so Id fit right in.
I did email the picture to my daughter, asking if I was too old for that look. She loved it but said I would need to dress appropriately for that kind of hair. She would send me pictures of what type of clothes I should wear. I thought, great! Shes much more stylish than me and has always been my style guru, so whatever she says, I go along with.
Then a thought hit me. No one looks at me anymore. It doesnt matter what I wear or if my hair doesnt fit my clothing style. So sad to become an invisible woman. It happens as we age. I knew it was coming and I was hoping Id be able to deal with it and I guess I am. Some days more than others. I never see any guys giving me the eye anymore unless they themselves are an old geezer. But thats ok. Experience, confidence and wisdom have replaced the insecurity that once formed my opinion of myself.
I just hope I dont hate it but Im glad Im spunky enough still to try something more edgy. But then thats what us, artists do.
There are plenty of guys giving you the “eye”. Now days we have to be a lot more sly about it….for fear of sexual harrassment suits etc. Take it from an old Geezer!!

Go with the new style. Doesn’t matter if no one looks at you (which I don’t believe). I’m just letting mine go gray. It has one of those streaks from the forehead back. I kinda like it.

go for it! you have the hutzpah and body for it so do it. i tried red for six weeks just to say i could/did. life’s too short to worry about the next person’s opinion lol

A woman as beautiful as you are can do whatever she pleases and still be stunning. I like that new look. Edgy is good, don’t you think? By the way, thank you for stopping by my corner of OD.

I think your hair in the profile looks beautiful… but then, it’s YOUR hair… 🙂

I don’t believe for a minute guys aren’t giving you the eye. I like the new look and hope you like it on yourself. I am a natural blond and going gray has been so easy; I just keep on highlighting and will until I die!

LOVED your next-to-last paragraph here. I feel exactly the same way and am loving the true freedom that brings. With age (and its companion maturity), you truly don’t sweat the small shit anymore and realize almost all of “it” is small shit after all. But…for what it’s worth…I would be one of those old geezers checking you out. hehe

Hair is not a tattoo.. go for it.

RYN: Glad to know that both our tickers are still ticking right along! I like the top one color and underside a contrasting color. When I was a hair model at the Long Beach hair stylist show several years ago I was in a big tent getting my hair colored from my blond gone white (rather than gray) with other models, vast majority girls and women, and saw that look for the first time. My dear Piglet keeps a dark brunette consistent with her Italo-Croatian coloring. I do know, having known her mother, that she is probably totally gray by now and I love her either way. As for being well-groomed and fit, women of all ages get attention on Main Street in Surf City. Ciao,

I think the new color would be great. I have been anxious to get to the “When I Am Old I Shall Wear Purple” stage. I am there and just may dye my hair purple. Or not!

I’ve got the silver thing going, or in some photos which are rarely taken these days, white thing when it comes to hair color. Have thought about coloring it, but I really do not want to do the upkeep. I’ve seen that hairstyle and it is attractive. By the way, so are you.

RYN: Thank you for the kind observations. I was morbidly obese. Even though I continued to walk I started getting blisters and more aches and pains all of which were starting me on the sedentary spiral. Georgette and G are very good company. The art in their home is eclectic enriched by some genuine collectibles found at garage sales and the orginals of Georgette’s pieces that she’d posted onher diary previously. I hope you have a good day. Ciao,
