About last night

How about those Pistons, eh?  I can’t name anyone outside the Detroit area that thought they could win the championship against the Lakers in five games.  Like much of America, I hate the Lakers.  Shaq and Kobe have each shown moments of questionable character, and any team that whines and has as many issues as those guys doesn’t deserve to win a championship (let alone four in five years).  Detroit, a team without any super-huge stars, won by sharing the ball well (all five starters scored in double figures yesterday), accepting their roles (even the bench players love playing for them), and playing awesome defense.  They’re a model for pro sports teams everywhere.

Might Could played a show in downtown Baltimore last night.  It was a last minute setup.  Last Tuesday, the organizer came up to us and asked if we would do it.  He said they’d record the show and put one of our songs on a compilation CD.  We would have to pay a small fee for this, but we’d get 40 copies of the CD to give out or sell as we pleased.

The bar was a pretty small place right near some water in Fells Point.  As soon as we walked in, we knew it wasn’t going to be a happenin’ place.  The main eating area was empty, and there were only five or six people at the bar.  Also, there was a sound guy with a full mixer/computer/rig setup.  He was gonna record the show.

We did a typical half-hour set.  The monitors weren’t adjusted properly, so I spent most of the show unable to hear myself.  On top of that, it was hot as hell in there, and I had to worry about my glasses falling off or my pick sliding out of my fingers.  However, since the crowd was so small, we decided not to really care about how we sounded, so it made us looser and let us have more fun while playing.

One of the attendees was quite odd.  She was wearing a black outfit which wasn’t too skanky in itself, but her face was completely caked in makeup.  You name it, it was on there.  Featured prominently was this gold glitter around her eyes.  Our bass player noticed her bag (which was overflowing) contained a deck of tarot cards.  During the middle of one of our duo songs, she got up and started dancing to it.  It was crazy.  I leaned over to Andy and said “dude, I can’t watch!”  He agreed, and we both did our damndest not to look at her to avoid busting out laughing.

Despite the fact only three or four people were listening, it felt good to see one person call a friend up on her cell during our set and hold the phone in the air so the other end could listen.  Crazy dancer person was also friendly to us afterward.  She said she was into the music, as she is a singer-songwriter herself.

“You all should check out my lyrics,” said she.
“This, I gotta see,” said Gordo, Andy, and I separately.

They contained lyrical gems such as, “I can make any man go crazy twice / when I shake my hips and grind real nice.”

We got out of there in a hurry.  A little pizza and beer later, and we were headed back to College Park.  We got out of the bar without paying the sound guy a dime.  He didn’t ask for payment, and we weren’t told explicitly to pay that guy, so he got nothing.  This was not the best show ever (we only made three new fans and didn’t play perfectly), but it was fun in a way.

I’ve done the cell-in-the-air-so-others-can-listen thing. I wish I could have seen the crazy make-up lady. This note has a lot of hyphens.

I’ve always wondered what band members think of the freak people dancing. I don’t know if I could hold it in.
