A brief military news bit

I don’t think I’ve written about this much here, but during the flight of Z and I from Italy to the US last summer, I sat next to a guy going home from Iraq. His mom was very sick and he got emergency dispensation to visit her briefly. Maybe he’s still there.

Anyway, our conversation determined that he felt used by the government. Morale was down (this was last summer, mind you) despite the fact that he was on the mission that killed Uday and Qusay (which was a huge deal at the time).

Anyway, I found this article today. I’ve seen others like it, but I figure I’d post it as a sample. Anyway, it’s evidence that my impression from last July is still true. The government is using its own military like cheap whores.

I like the fact we have an all-volunteer military (although I’m hard pressed to determine why National Guard troops are defending our country over there). An all-volunteer military will have the best possible soldiers, for draftees probably aren’t as motivated to fight. Also, drafts represent tyranny at its worst. However, I hope after the gov’t pulls crap like this that noone enlists in the Army again.

That would be too much to ask, but at least it would be funny. – MC
