misspelled and loosing direction

hannah left for course three of chemo this morning. i was going to drive down to A2 to visit her, but i have a horendous(sp) cold. can’t really hang out in the auto-immune suppressed ward with a cold.
so i am in town, seriously considering calling in for my shift tonight. i have this pounding in my head, this gunk in my nose, my voice has gone on vacation, my lungs ache and my throat burns. sounds lovely, right?
for any of you who love politics/the judicial system. on thursday my family’s case against the Mount Pleasant Public Schools and Boy Scouts of America goes to the Supreme Court. we are pretty sure that they will not see our case, but it is still cool anyway.
a brief synopsis of the case: in the mid 90’s a recuruiter for boyscouts came to my brothers class to advertise for a sign up day. My brother and Dad attended this sign-up (in the school cafeteria) with the intention of my Dad becoming a pack leader and my brother a scout. At the meeting everything was fine until my Dad and brother(who was 7 or 8) were asked to sign a paper that stated they were physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight. My Dad and brother refused to sign the form as it was against their beliefs as secular humanists to be morally straight. Because honestly, what does morally straight mean? In the Boy Scouts case, it means to be a Christian. There was also a piece that talked about an “obligation to God”
The boy scouts is a private organization, they can do whatever they want in their own time and space. But if the boyscoulds wants to exclude people for not being Christian, they cannot do so during school time. Which means no recruiting during class, no school supplies, no bulletin boards or display cases. But Mount Pleasant Public Schools were actively sponsoring the boy scouts. It’s a simple case of seperation of church and state. And the only thing my Dad has asked for is that the Boy Scouts NOT be affiliated with the public school. Why should our tax dollars pay for a group that discriminates based on religion?
My family sued, the judge ruled in our favor and then revoked his decision(it was an election year) the Michigan Supreme court is made up of, get this….BOY SCOUT LEADERS! None of them recused themselves(which i think is sickening and a blantant disregard for justice) and now we are going to the Supreme court.
My whole thing is that the schools shouldn’t participate with groups that discriminate. so that is happening this week, it’s a good thing to look into. My Dad’s name is John Scalise if you want to google it.
Oh, and any bullshit propoganda about religion in schools being good, will be deleted immediatly. I have no tolerance for unconstitutional people.

Last night was pretty awesome, we played hide and go seek in Timber Town (this huge wooden play ground) it was pitch black and a few of us got hurt. I ran smack into this giant pole. Ate the new ultimate chalupa (to die for!) and stayed up way to late watching Fresh Prince. Mallorys couch is the most uncomfortable piece of furniture ever invented. But the floor was so nasty. Ever since they have become stoners there is ash and food wrappers ground into the carpet. So I just had to die on the couch.
I’m supposed to work tonight, but I’m thinking of three million excuses not to go. I will in the end, I need the money.

did you mean to misspell “losing”? oh, the irony =c) not quite so funny is how far we’ve come from the original meaning of “separation of church and state.” by the original meaning of the phrase, a school would be at-fault for discriminating against the boy scouts for their stance. such discrimination is far more directly unconstitutional….

…. the historical fact is that america was formed for religious freedom, not freedom from religion. you may be absolutely right in your position. just know that it’s ahistorical and misinformed. chalupas are definitely freaking amazing, though!

ryn: thanks for your notes. i’d agree that public groups shouldn’t be sponsored by public schools; hosting should be allowed though. anything less is truly discriminatory by the constitution, but, you’re right, anything more is also unfair. i’ve accepted the fact that, while america does not have its roots in humanism, it’s also a democracy, and the people get what they want now. oh well.

heh, Michigan’s perspective doesn’t matter, Washington D.C. does. and they think he’s an idiot. 😀

re: um, I never said I was too old for him. I compared the sensation to the same sensation you get when you realize you are too old for something. like being too old to watch the disney channel or too old to play with legos or too old to play hide-and-seek. it’s the same feeling.

To my entries? What do you mean?

Around here anyone can be in the scouts. They even cater to other religions and an atheist boyscout I know is just respectful when he’s teaching at boyscout camp, so I don’t get it. Maybe it’s just your state? There is an oath saying you have to acknowledge “god” but doesn’t dictate who god is. Even AA says you need a higher power. No judgment here. I’m not a believer myself. This is fascinating.
