Miracle – First two drafts

Miracle (draft 1)

She knows she’s not the kind of girl
who is capable of miracles.
She thinks her halo
a little too tarnished
to make that kind of mark upon the world.

But I know, if there ever was a wonder
worth putting a little faith in, she is.
Whether she believes it
every life she’s touched is blessed
and I’m not saying she’s heaven sent,
but she will always be
miracle enough for me.

Miracle (draft 2)

When she’s down on her knees to pray
she only sees the wholeness of her palms,
the absence of stigmata.
She sees outstretched hands with the ache
but not the nails,
hands that reach out but cannot heal.
She sees a steeple of fingers
raw with a life spent polishing
the tarnish from her halo.

ever seeking the wonders of this world
and questioning those beyond it,
find a little of both inside her smile.
She may not have the same faith as I
that every life she’s touched is blessed,
but I am never agnostic where she’s concerned:
she will always be
miracle enough for me.

I like the first one better – the run on at the start of the second stanza that makes a separate new phrase is lovely 🙂
