Everybody Is Doing It by Benjamin Zephaniah

This is by the guy who turned down an OBE from the Queen today….I was checking out his website, and thought this was cool…go Benjamin!

Everybody Is Doing It by Benjamin Zephaniah
(from ‘Wicked World’)

“In Hawaii they Hula
They Tango in Argentina
They Reggae in Jamaica
And they Rumba down in Cuba,
In Trinidad and Tobago
They do the Calypso
And in Spain the Spanish
They really do Flamenco.

In the Punjab they Bhangra
How they dance Kathak in India
Over in Guatemala
They dance the sweet Marimba,
Even foxes dance a lot
They invented the Fox Trot,
In Australia it’s true
They dance to the Didgeridoo.

In Kenya they Benga
They Highlife in Ghana
They dance Ballet all over
And Rai dance in Algeria,
They Jali in Mali
In Brazil they Samba
And the girls do Belly Dancing
In the northern parts of Africa.

Everybody does the Disco
From Baghdad to San Francisco
Many folk with razzamataz
Cannot help dancing to Jazz,
They do the Jig in Ireland
And it is really true
They still Morris dance in England
When they can find time to.”

Oh, I should mention, the “Go Benjamin” I wrote above is for his work.  The OBE is his choice, though his reasons for it are commendable.

In Leeds they go crazy on the dancefloor and dance their feet off – well, that’s just me. Oh, and RYN: One of these times I’m in London I’ll suggest we try and synchronise our diaries 🙂

What OBE? Sorry for ignorance.

Thanks for the note. I’m behind on anything news-like so I’m lost on this entry. But the poem rocks my socks. 😛

Well my emotions are caught up in someways because I’m a virgo and I can be detach myself emotionally. Ne ways thanx for liking my diary and I hope you come back.

Thanks for making me a favourite. I read about Benjamin Zephaniah turning down the MBE. I have always loved his work from the first time I heard him. I like the way how he performs his poetry especially on the radio and on the TV.
