Updates (8/30)
I know that I haven’t written in a while, but I really haven’t had much news to write about.
The past week has been a pretty good week at work. The time has been pretty evenly split between professional development and work time in my classroom. My room has come together pretty nicely. All of my little trinkets and knickknacks survived the various moves. I kept a few select pieces of student art that was given to me through the years, and have that hung up and on my desk. I also have a little cubicle where my desk and computer are in a corner that is decorated with art from L and A.
This evening was our Open House, and I got to meet a few students and a few parents. Most of those that came were from the Honors and AP sections, though (which I have none of).
I’m a little irked about my lunch duty. I got my schedule for that, and I only have 20 minutes for my own lunch. That is barely enough time to eat, so hopefully I don’t need to use the restroom as well during that time. I’m going to talk to my principal about it when next I see him (hopefully tomorrow).
L has not had a good go of the past week. He has been really down and has had a very hard time falling asleep. I hope that it gets better when he starts actual school on Friday and starts to make some friends. A has been doing much better. He’s been talking a lot about his excitement. I hope he adjusts easily.
M has not been sleeping well, mostly. I think that she is just as nervous as the boys about the start of the school year. I’ve been down in the basement every night, which usually helps her sleep more productively, but it hasn’t really helped her. I bought her a Brown noise machine; tonight will be the maiden voyage, so I hope it goes well. When she goes through these periods of 2-4 hours of sleep a night, she is very grouchy and short with everyone else in the house. She also completely withdraws into her phone, and really doesn’t seem like she wants to do anything with any of us. It occasionally makes me feel like I’m single parenting. And with the insane busyness of the next three weeks before closing on the house, I think that we will really need each other’s support a lot.
Last night my parents and brother came over for an impromptu cookout. We still aren’t really ready for company in the house; but the weather was beautiful, so we were just sat outside.
Upcoming things:
Friday is the first day with kids at school. Should be good. I feel that I’m as prepared as I ever am at the start of the year.
Saturday we have no plans. That’s good, because it will be over 100 degrees. I hope to get another dozen boxes (or more!) unpacked and put away/organized.
Sunday we are going to a cookout/pool party at my cousin’s house. It will again be over 100, but that’s a little different when you’re playing in the water.
I hear that it’s supposed to be v. hot over the weekend too. 😮 Maybe a bit of indian summer. Also, 20 minute lunch? And you can’t go to the loo?! Not fair!!

That 20-minute break is pretty lousy if you are a full-time employee. You’ll have to ask around and see if it’s the same with other teachers too, maybe they have some work-arounds.
I do hope the brown noise works for her. Before i got one, I would wake frequently during the night and spend hours trying to get back to sleep. Now I direct my attention to the noise and usually fall back asleep within minutes. 🤞
One more thing i remembered, is your pillow keeping your head, neck, and spine in neutral position? My partner came into our relationship with two mushy down pillows he insists on sleeping with. He has very broad shoulders and the mushy pillows put his head at an angle no matter if he was on his side or back. I added a firmer pillow under the mushy pillows and his snoring improved significantly to where it’s not as loud or as often. Worth a try if you haven’t already.

What’s wrong with this picture? Out here on the Left Coast, tomorrow will be 75 with possible showers (!), Saturday 80, Sunday 82 and Monday 89. Then we’re back up into the low 90s, which are a cakewalk after all the 99s and triple digits. But how come you guys got all the heat we usually have the market cornered on? (Was that a sentence …?)

I think they are picking on you because you are new. I don’t think they can legally only give you 20 mins for lunch. I hope your sons find the transition to the new school good.
