Quick Notes (8/23)

1. I took the boys to the library in the new city on Monday. They both got their own library cards, and they were both SOOO excited to get them. They had accounts back in the old town, but never needed cards because all of the librarians knew us by name. After they got their cards, we spent about an hour exploring the children’s and young adult sections of the place. It made me super proud and happy to see them so excited about their new cards. It was a super awesome Dad Moment for me.
2. The first All-Staff day at work was yesterday. I met so many people. Most of them seemed very nice. I won’t remember any of their names today.
3. I have been feeling crummy since Dumpster Day (sore throat, runny nose, sneezing). Took a Covid test today, and it came back negative. Yay!

4. It is going to be super hot today and tomorrow. The heat index here is projected to be 118 degrees. Not exciting.
5. My little brother is coming over on Saturday to help me install a new ceiling fan in the living room. I hate doing electrical work. I’m always concerned that I’m going to kill myself via electric shock.
6. all of the cabinet doors and drawers need new, longer screws for their pulls. It is super frustrating. I did this at the old house, and it was probably the worst home improvement job that over ever done. Probably because I’m somewhat anal about measurements of things like that. So I ordered new screws and have delayed the inevitable job for a few days while I wait for them to come in.

7. L had a really bad, sad night this week. He had asked M to take a video of our empty house, and after seeing it just couldn’t take all of the feels. I think he will be better once school starts, and he realizes how amazing of a kid he is. He will have no problems making new friends.
8. I have officially been relegated to the downstairs basement bedroom. I’m pretty sad about that. After the new insurance kicks in, I’ll likely see a doctor and start the long road to getting surgery for my snoring/heavy breathing.

Hey… I’m Sammy. Our library is a haven for homeless people… so we can’t go there for fear of getting bedbugs, which actually happened. (We are getting the second spray tomorrow!) but it used to be a great place to just be. Y’know?? I had a basement bedroom… didn’t like it that much. Have you tried a Cpap machine??

@pearlescentnocturnemoon I haven’t tried a machine, because that wouldn’t fix the problem; the bigger problem is that my spouse can’t fall asleep with ANY noise. A machine would only exasperate the issue, unfortunately.

Have you tried the Breathe Right strips?  My son uses them for snoring and they work great.

@bj I have! They work well, but the nasal dilators are way better, in my opinion (they go inside the nose, but do the same thing as the external strips).

@lonelydad  at least you have tried several things.  It sounds like surgery will be the best.  I’m sorry you have to sleep in the basement, that’s no fun amid it is isolating.

The two things that made my kids feel responsible were library cards and having their own savings account at the bank. (Do banks even offer kids accounts anymore???) I love libraries and brought my kids there weekly, had them join the summer reading activities, etc. Glad to see young families still do that.

As for the sleeping arrangements, it’s a tough and unfortunate situation.  My partner snores and tosses and turns alot and I am a light sleeper–the sound of a mouse walking in the attic at night can wake me. We got a Sleep Number bed which resolved the bed movement (since each side inflates separately). I added a brown noise machine to my nightstand about 2 yrs ago and have been sleeping soundly ever since for the most part, and this is after 30+ yrs of poor sleep. (The downside is I also now sleep through the storm sirens.) I hope this issue can be resolved soon…for you both.
