Moving forward and backward and not at all
The last few days have been a whirlwind of data, professional development, new people, and meetings. I met several people in my department, and they seem very nice.
I think that I will get along very well with my mentor teacher; she is about my age, has been in the profession about as long, shares similar interests (Star Wars!), and seems to have similar attitudes about things.
One of the other new staff in the department is going to be rather irksome to me, I fear. He is one of those people who always seems to have something to add to a conversation in order to get the last word in. It could just be the general nervousness and excitement of starting a new job, though. I’ll just have to see.
Administration seems good, but a little on the lax side of things. That makes me slightly nervous, because I’m coming from a district/school with a VERY weak admin team, so I know how frustrating it can be at times. They might be completely different when students are in the building, and I’ll just have to give it some time before making a judgement on that.
Things at home have been fine. I’ve slowly been working my way through the pile of boxes and totes in the basement. It is shrinking, to be sure; however, a lot of it won’t get unboxed until our new flooring is done next month.
The house looks very bare right now. M doesn’t want to put anything on the walls until the furniture is picked out, purchased, and delivered. And none of that will happen until the floors are done.
In fact, it seems like not much of anything will get done until after the floors. More waiting.
M and I are going up to the old house today. The dumpster for our garbage was delivered yesterday. Our buyers will hopefully come over this afternoon to go through the furniture we’re leaving. We also will have a very full van load of stuff to bring to the new house. I doubt that it will all fit in a single load, mostly because of my raised garden and M’s digital piano. It’s okay if it doesn’t, though; I’m going to have two more trips up there in the next month: one to close in the house, and one to work the fundraiser I agreed to months ago.
Thank you for teaching, it is a very difficult career. I hope your first impression of the admin team proves to be wrong. My daughter taught for 10 yrs and what broke her was lack of support from administration after one of her challenging kindergarten students threatened to punch her so hard it would kill her baby. (This was just one of several unaddressed/ignored issues with the child.) She moved into workers comp insurance–where she met a lot of other former teachers!!
Hope those floors get in soon so you all can feel more settled.
@elkay Yikes! That’s such a terrible thing to hear from a kindergartner, that I can barely believe it. I certainly don’t blame her for leaving after that.
And thank you for the kind sentiment; it is much appreciated!

An y guestimate on when the floors will get put in?
@ghostdancer Well, they were originally planned for September 12, but have been pushed back to September 19, as of now. And we can hardly wait. This futon will be good basement furniture, but it does NOT tie the room together upstairs.
@lonelydad Fingers crossed it doesn’t get pushed back any further. I know you’re all anxious to start getting your new home put together!

It is great news the people you will be working with are nice. It makes it so much more comfortable to be there. It will be your new work circle of friends. I think that is exciting. 😎
