House Purchase
We have decided to purchase my Grandpa’s house from my mom, aunt, and uncle. It was not a decision that was made lightly, but it is one that I think I can live with. M, also, has expressed slight disappointment in the decision, but has told me that she can also live with it.
The housing market is just so crazy right now. We don’t know that we would be able to find our “perfect” house if we had another 2 months or another 2 years. One of the houses we saw on Monday was excellent, until we found out that it gets water in the basement during heavy rains. That conversation started with the seller saying it was “just moisture.” Then we pressed a little more and got “a few puddles.” This was too concerning for us, so we told them no thank you. Foundation problems are pretty terrifying; it could cost a LOT of money to fix them, and this house was being sold “as is.”
And that was the story with almost everything that we saw. There was always something that kept us from pulling the trigger on them. At this point, we need to get this process moving so we can be at least somewhat established by the time the school year starts. In that respect, this decision is definitely the right one. We have started shopping for flooring and furniture. We have started looking into moving companies. We have started looking into junk removal services. We have started the process of getting the boys transferred to the new district. We couldn’t really be doing any of this if we were still in house limbo.
I am still concerned about buying from family. Family and money don’t usually mix well, and I’m worried about the relationships with both my immediate (Mom, brothers) and extended (aunts, uncles, cousins) families being strained.
At this point, all that is going to be out on the back burner, though. We have too much to do, and less than a month to do it.
