Modest Mouse

After my last two entries, I figured I’d write something a little lighter. Something that says a little more about who I am rather than what I feel.

My username, littlemotel, is after the Modest Mouse song of the same title. The music video is awfully depressing, but it’s still so heartfelt that I feel like it could be interpreted in many different ways. “I hope that you like it in your little motel, and I hope that the suite sleeps and suits you well. Well, I can see it as time and a sight through smell, and, that’s why it’s nice to be by yourself.” The lyrics seem to make no sense unless you feel them. You must know it to understand it. Here I go again with the feelings…

My diary title, Here’s to Now, is an Ugly Casanova song. Ugly Casanova is a side project band by Isaac Brock, the lead singer of Modest Mouse. “Here’s to now… Here’s to now. Actually, was thinking, said everything out loud. Cuz, apricot seeds carry arsenic that we don’t worry about.” Just a few sentences carry so much weight. “Here’s to now.” “Apricot seeds carry arsenic that we don’t worry about.” I interpret that as… live for the moment and don’t worry about poisoning yourself, because it’s just small amounts. Sure it may build up over time, but at least you’re enjoying life in the moment. Of course that can be taken further, like how mankind is destroying the planet and living for the now not for the future, which also happens to be a common theme in the latest Modest Mouse album called Strangers to Ourselves.

If you can’t tell, Modest Mouse is my favorite band. They’re a witty and overtly intelligent band that writes songs that are so massively… intuitive and intense. Like, they just don’t give a shit about who they may offend. “Opinions were like kittens I was giving them away.”

Let’s dive in a little more. I’m not super intense all the time. I also am very much into the band Phish, who takes almost nothing seriously. I mean they have a song titled “Meatstick.” “Time for the meatstick, bury the meatstick, take out the meatstick now. Woah, shocks my brain.” Yep. See? Not always serious.

In fact, my daughter loves Phish. I went into labor during one of their “Dinner and a Movie” nights (they played past recorded shows every Tuesday once the pandemic began). It was my husband and my favorite way to spend Tuesday nights. Then, once my daughter was born (she was pretty fussy for the first month or so, once Phish hit the TV screen she watched happily.

Well, here’s some lighter writing for tonight. I should probably get some homework done.

Night, all.

Nice to meet you

I love Modest Mouse! Cowboy Dan has so much raw righteous anger- it’s my favorite song of theirs. “Opinions like kittens” and “orange julius” it feels like they know this stuff, it’s personal and their history. It’s authentic.

Thank you for sharing your feelings and experiences. It’s such a shitty time. I’m also looking for a place to share and hear others. And get things out that I wouldn’t want to share with social media friends. I really like this platform.
