Aviary
It was an aviary I saw today
large, with many birds.
But it was you I saw today
and it was you I felt for
It was you my heart fluttered for
it was you my heart cooed for
I remember my childhood bird
in its cage, on the veranda
And other birds would sit nearby
and other birds would sing nearby
An aviary’s no home
however large.
And I can sit nearby,
And I can sing
But until you’re free to fly
how will you come home to me?
