Star Wars went Disney

I just wanted to make a note that, for those who don’t already know, Disney has acquired LuscasArts and they are planning Episode VII.

I don’t know how I feel about this. On one hand I’m really sad that George Lucas is taking a back seat because I really think that he’s an amazing director who just got way too carried away.

On the other hand, George Lucas got way too carried away with the prequel trilogy and I am cautiously hopeful that bringing in new authority will revamp the story line. What I heard when they started talking about their plans for Episode VII (no spoilers yet) was ‘Expanded Universe.’

I have always, always, always hoped that Lucas would dive into the expanded universe. There is SO MUCH there! So many great stories that, if translated well into the form of a movie, could be really, really, epic. But when Lucas sort of botched the prequel trilogy, I think my hopes for that were sort of dashed.

The problem I am facing in being able to be really excited about this change of hands is that Disney won’t be making a mediocre movie. It will either be really good, or horrifyingly bad. There won’t be a middle ground and if they mess it up we are now going to have all these actor’s faces pasted to characters we’ve always loved but have only been able to read about and the illusion that the stories have is going to be forever shattered. That’s what I’m afraid of. They have a very real potential to ruin stories I’ve grown up with from the books. It’s really rather frightening.

Anyway, just wanted to add a date to my thoughts on it. I’m going to finish the rest of my week off now. Toodles!

So much to say. Thoughts upon thoughts. Thank you for writing this! On the one hand, Disney’s done so much that’s so full of win and I might get to see that Sw theme park. I don’t know if I want ep 7 tho. I have to reply in greater detail soon…perhaps an entry

Disney has done a good job with the Marvel movies, and Lucas is still going to be involved as a creative consultant. I’m rather hopeful that Disney will be able to take it to places that Lucas wasn’t willing to go. The only thing that strikes me as odd is that he was so adamant about it basically dying with him that this 180 is kind of a surprise.
