Paths they might take
I was reading an article that was sent to me by my friend on Facebook about the possible directions Disney could take with the new Star Wars films and it was both very interesting and very frightening. I was actually a little surprised not to see the Jedi Academy Trilogy listed among the possibilities cited, but at the same time, they really couldn’t include EVERY POSSIBILITY because that would just be a ridiculously long article.
The first one they mentioned was a no brainer: the Heir to the Empire Trilogy that chronicles the tattered remnants of the empire coming back together under the control of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Leia is pregnant with the Solo twins and Luke is working on rebuilding the Jedi, so it would be a logical next step.
The second trilogy they mentioned I have actually never read before and I really think that Disney won’t choose to go this way. It involves a clone of the Emperor, which is stupid in my mind because why would you want the same villain? I think it would feel too repetitive.
The last one they mentioned was under the possibility that Disney might choose to veer away from the Skywalker saga and focus more on other prominent characters that also had really important roles both in the movies and in the extended universe, but didn’t actually have very large parts. They talked a bit about the X-Wing Squadron books, which of course means Wedge Antilles, and that would be brilliant. They also mentioned the bounty hunters and talked a bit about books like The Mandalorian Armor, where Boba Fett survives the Sarlac Pit. There’s a lot of history to Boba Fett that I think could make an amazing few movies and if Disney did go this route I would really hope that they would bring the whole Mandalorian history to light.
Another possibility that I hope for is to see something from the far, far past of the galaxy. I would like to see the rise of the Sith Empire and the actual Sith race before they went extinct. The Sith have always been portrayed as evil, but I think it would be interesting to see something from the Sith point of view when they’re really in their element and don’t have to hide what they are. I’d like to see a Sith protagonist. If Disney went back into the ancient history of the galaxy, this is entirely possible. The Sith way is also a code of life, just like the path of the Jedi, but it’s more inwardly focused. They don’t concentrate on bettering the galaxy, the concentrate on bettering themselves and being the best that they absolutely can be. This can get twisted into selfishness and downright greed, but there’s so much more to it than that and it would be really interesting to see it translated onto the big screen.
There is so much more I want to write on this subject, but I have my first flight lesson in an hour and need to get ready. Woo!
I’ve made a decision to be excited by this. This is going to be win, and I’m no longer scared. I’d like to see them veer away from the Skywalker saga, because I feel like keeping on with the Skywalkers would….cheapen the classic films. There’s an immensity of other material in this universe, as you said, wouldn’t X-Wing Squadron be marvellous?

The far past would be fascinating too. I’m trying to compose something about this, but there’s too much to say. I still want someone to, just, show us what happened in the 20 years between ROTS and ANH. Have fun with flight lessons! Fun fun, I’m jealous.

The article I read said it will be an “original” story not connected to the others. The Sith empire would be cool, like the trailer from the Old Republic, a lot of oppurtunity for light saber battles.
