Dammit, I’m getting the restlessness again!
You know what? San Diego is a great city! I may have said it before, but you know, I really really love San Diego. And not just the city, but the entire county has so much more to offer than I originally thought when I first moved here. I remember specifically stating how terrible it was that there were no proper forests or any real greenery, that the desert was cool and all but I didn’t really view it as NATURE.
Amazing how life and a couple of damn good years can change one’s perspective of a place. San Diego, for the most part, encompasses everything about life that I’ve always wanted. It’s a big city, everything is close, there are tons of opportunities, but you can still drive a bit and get into parts of the county where there’s no one. You can sit out in the middle of the desert and look at the stars and listen to the great silence of the world. There is natural beauty here.
Desert beauty is a hard thing to compare to forest beauty. You want to say, "Well they’re the same because they’re both natural beauty," but that’s not really the case. Deserts are harsh, hard. They’re always hot, or always cold, but never in between. However, deserts have their moments, and if you know when to catch them they can take your breath right out of you.
This is the Anza Borrego Desert. In 2007, just after the terrible wild fires that plagued San Diego, the desert exploded into a riot of color.
This photo is a bit old, but it’s a good example of what I’m trying to get at (also, note the copy right on the picture. I didn’t take this). The nature here is unexpected. You have to look for it, but you’re always going to be impressed when you find it.
I want to make a photo journal of the non-city related opportunities in San Diego. I think this weekend might be a good time to start. There might even still be snow in Julian. I haven’t used my camera in quite a while and I’m sure it would appreciate a good dusting off.
Such a pretty desert picture! I didn’t even know flowers could grow in the desert, but I’ve seen some stunning Californian landscapes. I’d like to live in Southern California where it’s warm all the time.
