Four Day Weekend
I’ve finally found a spare minute to sit down and write out an entry. It feels like I haven’t been here in ages, but that’s not really true. I haven’t been noting and I haven’t been writing, but I’m trying to keep up with everyone. I’m sorry I don’t let you know.
First things first! As you know, it’s the end of July. This means that Comic Con happened and I geeked out super hard for four days. I didn’t go to as many panels this year though. I also didn’t spend most of the time by myself. When I’m alone, I’ll usually just sit through tons of panels on things like writing and story telling and new books that are coming out (because there are always many many authors there that I want to see in person!) or the occasional movie I might be interested in.
So, things that I saw in the way of panels this year.
1. My cousins and I caught the tail end of the panel for a web series called Ghost Girls starring Jack Black. It was really cool to see him in person and I liked hearing about things that were up coming from him. They aren’t going to do too much with Tenacious D I guess because they had to sell the rights to the name when they made their movie, which was disappointing, but I am glad he and KG are still doing things.
2. The Workaholics Panel! It was seriously the best panel I have ever seen. Kyle, Anders, Blake, and Adam were all there and it was so hilarious to watch them banter. It’s a completely different dynamic than when you watch actors that were just in movies together. They are best friends in real life. It was hilarious to watch them banter and talk about the new season and what other things we can expect from them.
3. The Ender’s Game Panel! Anyone who reads science fiction is anticipating this movie! They showed an exclusive trailer for the movie that no one had seen before (It’s so damn pretty guys!) And all the major actors talked about their experiences on set and what it was like for Asa Butterfield to work next to an icon like Harrison Ford!
Guys. Harrison Ford was there. I was sooooo disappointed with the questions that people were asking him though, and I think he got a little irritated too. No one cared about his role as Hyrum Graff, they all wanted to ask stupid questions about Star Wars or Indiana Jones. I mean, stupid questions (like "What would be the first words they would say to each other if Han Solo met Indiana Jones). I mean, come on. The one good question was ‘What goes through your mind when you think about the issues addressed in Ender’s Game?"
He speaks slowly, but he had a really well articulated answer and if the people had actually thought to ask well thought out questions RELATED TO ENDER’S GAME AND HIS MENTALITY/EXPERIENCE AS AN ACTOR it might have been a really awesome fan interview.
And that’s it! I only saw three panels this year. I spent a lot more time on the exhibit floor actually paying attention to the artists and the comic book stands. I know a little more about comics this year than I did in previous years because Wayne will actually sit down and talk about comics with me and introduced me to a really cool local comic book shop that I now use as my go-to for Star Wars comics, Magic cards, and everything else comic related. I didn’t feel like an idiot walking around the floor this year. It was nice. The talent is unbelievable. There are so, so, so many artists in one spot, it’s really inspirational. I also love seeing all the new games that are being demoed. I played a short run through Neverwinter, messed with a 3DS and got to see the new Playstations. The X Boxes weren’t even hooked up and no one was even at the booth, which I wasn’t really surprised to see.
We also spent a lot of time outside the convention center. Comic Con has become so huge that its events now spill over several city blocks, including Petco Park (the baseball stadium), several major hotels, restaurants, etc. I actually played Neverwinter in a hall at Petco Park. I have to remember next year that we need to spend more time at bars, because apparently that’s where you need to go to meet famous people.
It was so much fun. It was so nice to just be around all those people who love the same things that I do. It’s weird because it’s sort of relaxing. It’s so packed and you’re being jostled around all the time, stuffed into this place like a bunch of sardines, but it’s okay because you know everyone is just as giddy and happy to be there as you are, so they’re all super polite and patient.
Andy was able to spend a little time with us on Friday too. It was the first time he’d been to Comic Con in something like six years. I’m glad he did, because he’s into reading about the Extended Universe now! We went out yesterday to buy more books (I came away from Comic Con with a ton of Star Wars books. He started the Bounty Hunter Tales and also bought The Mandalorian Armor.
When he asked me if I wanted to read Star Wars books with him I’ll admit it made me super giddy. Having a boyfriend who actually likes to read and wants to read with me is really one of the best things ever.
So yeah. It was a lot of fun!
I so want to go one of these years.
