– Spring Has Sprung! –

About a week ago the Middle Son and I were out in front of the barn and we heard a distinctive sound.

We looked up and there was the source of the sound.

The Sand Hill Cranes were migrating, heading north.

The sky was full of them.

This group was the first we saw “Catch A Thermal” and gain altitude.

The daffodils are back!

And the cherry tree is in bloom.

The oldest Grandson and I are hoping we don’t get any rain between now and next Monday. He wants me to show him the way to the original site of the Argonne National Laboratory. It was originally located in the Cook County Forest Preserves southwest of Chicago.

The first controlled nuclear chain reaction took place in a graphite moderated reactor constructed in a squash court under Stagg Field on the grounds of the University of Chicago campus.

That reactor was known as CP1 (Chicago Pile 1). It was disassembled, transported to the Argonne Woods Forest Preserve, reconstructed and renamed CP2.

When the reactor was decommissioned it, along with CP3, a heavy water moderated reactor were encased in concrete and are buried at the “Old Argonne” site.
