– So Much More –
I like the two photos below so much more than the two taken from the same locations as shown in my entry of 02/02/11.
Three days and three nights with above freezing temperatures will do it.
Yesterday morning when I first went outside there was nine inches of snow bordering the walk.
In mid to late January we had several days of very high winds. In some areas of Chicago wind gusts exceeded 70 mph.
Youngest BIL had a large red oak come down. It was hung up in another tree. He had called several tree and landscaping services for prices for removal of the fallen tree. Some didn’t even want to touch it. Others quoted prices that YBIL thought were too high.
Finally he asked my Middle Son if he would take it down. MS took a look at it and said he would take it down but he would take the wood. YBIL agreed.
On 02_12_11 MS and Oldest Grandson and Oldest Son arrived with chainsaws and the backhoe.
I should have taken the camera with me down the hill to YBIL’s place but didn’t
My contribution consisted mainly of dragging some of the light stuff to the “brush pile” and observing.
I did a lot of observing.
Hey! As it says on one of my coffee mugs
– – – – – – if you’re pushing 70 – – – – – –
that’s exercise enough!
The bucket on the backhoe was filled a few times with what could easily be cut into fireplace lengths.
Then the main trunk was sectioned once it was cut free from an adjacent tree. Everything was hauled up behind the garage/clubhouse with the backhoe. The main trunk was at least thirty feet high from the ground to first big branch. . It was cut into five pieces that would just fit into the bucket of the backhoe.
I think that Middle Son should rent a bigger chain saw. The lowest and largest section is 35 and a half inches at its widest point. Those last five pieces are going to have to be cut to fireplace length. Then they will have to be split. That is going to be a real chore.
There is a break of six days between the first two and the following photos. Was to carry in groceries or something.
You can see that the distance between the last two sections is different in the second and third photo. I believe that it rolled when the snow melted. I’m glad my toes weren’t in the way
Then we have a few of the feline brigade that is still camping out in the barn. I think their eyes tell the story that they are not very comfortable with me being near by. I had just put some food out for them.
such pretty kitties! i look at wood like that as a whole lot of work to get it to fit into the fireplace/furnace. and did you ever have one that was just to big to fit and have the door close too

I love barn kitty’s. Yours look a lot better nourished than the ones you see around here. Our snow is nearly gone after a week of 35-50 degree days. But tomorrow we’re supposed to get another 14″. OH winter…

I wanna rescue the kities!!

i’d love to have those kittens. next year that wood will be perfect to burn!

That’s a lot of wood!! Have a similar look behind the trailer where daughter lives. BIG tree fell on trailer last Sep and afterward 3 more trees fell, but away from the trailer (Thank God). Neighbors are cutting the wood for next year, but it’s in a very awkward place to retrieve. Guess they will get what they can and guess Mother Nature will claim the rest.

Yep, I know that you have got to be sick of all that cold weather and snow. I have helped Jim with firewood before and oMG! Talk about work! Love the saying on your coffee mug. 🙂 Oh, sweet kitties! 🙂

Where do the kitties hang out when it’s freezing?

that tiger kitty looks a lot like one of my cats. that wood looks like no fun to grapple with either!

That’s a lot of firewood – but having said that I was astonished at how quickly the wood burner at my mother-in-law’s house ate its way through a load of logs in a single evening.

ryn; thank you for the suggestion of the light box. only problem is some of these pictures are 3×5 or 4×6 feet

RYN: The weather in Denver is currently consistently above 50 (for the daily high) and should stay like that for the rest of the year, barring any cold spells we might have. Goodluck!

RYN: I tried to access your private entry but was unsuccessful… love the black cats.. remind me of my black Manx cat Stumpy…

what a load of wood! I bet that kept somebody warm for a while if not this year. . . next so that it’s not so green and burns easier. We have a wood stove where we live and in a wooded area at that, so my husband will chop down what needs to come down and I’ll help carry wood to where he can split it. It may help cut down on the utility bill but you sure pay for that heat in other ways 🙂
