– Damn Deer & Other Critters! –

We have seen deer in the yard every day for at least a week. Yesterday there were seven at one time.

They have really done a number on the garden this year. REPEATEDLY!

Between last night and the night before the deer have stripped ALL the leaves off of the squash vines that were outside the fenced area. .

They ate all the leaves off of the bell peppers Again and at least three of the peppers.

They have not touched the tobacco peppers. Last night however they ate about half the leaves on the “Caribbean Red Hots” or whatever Son #2 planted. I hope they tried eating some of those peppers. When they pass gas they hopefully will end up somewhere in Canada.

The raccoons have totally destroyed at least three of the large Argonaut Squash.

The Wife-Unit and I harvested the squash outside of the fenced area this morning. They are not totally ripe but with the vines gone – – –

Sitting on the bench is a total of 91 pounds of Argonaut Squash in the first photo.

You can see where the raccoons were working on the squash on the far right

Hopefully we will have a “Frost” in the next couple of nights and we will then harvest the squash within the fenced area.

I didn’t weigh the “Butternut Squash” in the second photo.

The largest of the Argonaut Squash is 26 inches in length and at its widest it is 25 inches in circumference. It weighs 25 pounds.

There are a few more Argonaut Squash within the fence area and several of the Butternut variety. Hopefully we will be able to harvest them before the critters get to them.

Maybe I can use the one the raccoons were working on in the front dining room window instead of a pumpkin.

Now there’s a thought; you can call it a Jack-O-Lantern on a diet. 🙂

Oh, that reminds me, I haven’t had any butternut squash in a long time.

you still are getting a bounteous harvest, provided they are ripe enough, and what are your next plans?

Those are the seriously big squash! My question is are they tender. I love squash but always find that the most tender tasty squash are the really small yellow baby squash. I see the larger varieties in the grocery store and always wonder 1) how you fix ’em, 2) are they tender and tasty, and 3) what is it about them that people like about them?
