Things you can count on

There’s a saying here in the US (and I suspect worldwide) that the only things you can count on are death and taxes.  I’ve decided it’s another important one – change.  You can always count on things to change, whether in small increments or great big ones.  Things change because time marches onward.  Until we learn how to stop time from moving, things will always change.  The question is how do we deal with those changes when they come?  How do we deal with the changes we can see on the horizon and how do we deal with the ones that sneak up on us?

As anyone who’s been reading this diary knows, I spent a lot of time this year being frustrated with my primary class.  At the time, it was a big class of 5 and 6 year olds.  Just the nature of the kids meant that one person would have problems with the class on their own.  I spent a lot of time on my own until a few months ago.  A few months ago, a new family moved into the ward – a young couples with their 3 or 4 month old son.  He had actually lived in the ward several years before with his family.  In any case, she was called to be my team teacher and it was fantastic having her there.  The kids loved her and I could always count on her and she on me :).  For the last several weeks, everyone in the ward has known a change was coming in the Primary Presidency.  The same 4 women had been together as the presidency for four years, and that’s about the length of time they leave them in those callings, so as to limit burnout.  As a result, we all knew that a change within the presidency was coming.  Yesterday, it came.  The new president is actually the previous 1st counselor.  The new 1st counselor is the previous secretary.  The new 2nd counselor is…if you guessed my team teacher, you’re correct.  The new secretary is another lady from the ward.

Since my team teacher arrived, our class has gotten bigger.  We’ve had several new families move into the ward, and so now the class is 9 kids…and that’s 9 kids from active families.  From now until the first Sunday in January, I’m on my own. It’s back to passing around the livesaver thing in Gospel Doctrine each week, or me finding my own helper each week.  At least I’ll be changing classes come January.  The kids all move up a class in January anyway, and they switch the teachers around at the same time.  It looks like I’ll end up with one of the two oldest classes – both of which are great classes.  And we’re studying the Book of Mormon next year.

*Sigh* Can it please be Friday already?
