Lots on my mind again…
First, I just have to mention that I really don’t understand why you wouldn’t give your kid the H1N1 vaccine. From everything I’d read and heard from interviews done with the CDC, it’s made the same way as the seasonal flu shot. And if the H1N1 virus had shown up a few months earlier, it simply would have been included in this year’s flu shot. This virus can kill a child. Period. I watched as it nearly killed the child of a friend of mine this summer. A child who was otherwise healthy when she got sick. She spent nearly 3 weeks in the hospital with more than a week of that in the PICU and they came very very close to losing her. Whatever side effects you think might be associated with it – you can deal with those if you still have your child. If you don’t vaccinate and the virus kills your child, then there’s nothing left – you have no more tomorrow’s. Are you truly willing to risk your child’s life? And don’t get me started on the swine flu parties I’ve heard about – seriously, there’s no way to tell if you’re going to get a mild case or a more serious case. Stop risking your kids! {End Rant}
In other news, I suspect we’ll be putting Maxie down before too much longer. My mom came home to another accident. She seems to be having accidents in the house now whenever she’s not on the medication to stop the diarrhea. I wonder if it’s the wet dog food that’s causing them, but she can’t eat just dry dog food anymore. The vet is out of town til Tuesday, so my mom will call him then. But when I got home, my mom was talking about putting her down. I just…I hate the idea and start to cry when I think about it. My parents are headed to IL tomorrow. Yet again, I’m not going with them as they’re leaving before I get off work. So I’ll have the house to myself – I’m just hoping I don’t come home to a mess from Maxie.
We turned the heat on tonight when my mom and I both got home from work. Even with no windows open, our house got down to 66. That’s a function of highs around 55 and rain today. The problem is that the next time we *might* see sun again is Sunday and even that’s not a guarantee. Then another system is set to move in and we won’t see the sun then either. Generally, so long as we have temps in the 50s and 60s during the day with sunshine, we can leave the heat off this time of year. But the 50’s and rain have come early this year and seem to be staying. It’s a few weeks early though, with the 50’s and steady rain. But such is life.
I didn’t sign online tonight to MSN. I really just needed some time on my own tonight, to do some thinking and have some quiet time. Oh! The other thing I did tonight was the pre-registration stuff for surgery. I had to call the patient registration line at the hospital. The day of surgery, all I need is my insurance card and photo id. I’ll likely bring my purse with me and my iPod touch. Given that they usually make you get there really early, I’ll likely have some time that I can play on my iTouch. I know my mom will obviously be bringing stuff to do. Work’s really really getting on my nerves these days. I can’t begin to explain how badly I need a vacation from work. I’ve not mentioned all that’s on my mind, but that’s enough for one night.

Is Maxie just having diarrhea? There is no side effect of keeping her on long term treatment for it (endosorb or sulfasalazine work very well) and the medication isn’t expensive. If the medication works just keep her on it long term, putting her down for diarrhea is drastic when the treatment is so simple and effective. As far as wet food, depending on the brand it most likely is a major contributing factor. I’d take her off of it immediately and I would be willing to bet you’d see drastic improvement. If eating dry food is a problem for her (I’m gathering she is geriatric?) simple baked chicken with absolutely NO seasoning, or browning hamburger with ALL the fat drained off mixed 50/50 with boiled rice is a home treatment for diarrhea and as a general rule dogs love it. I am sorry you have to go through this, it is the hardest part of pet owner ship. And just as an aside I’m a Vet Tech, not just a random reader so I am not just offering an opinion, I actually know what I’m talking about!

I just wanted to add an addendum to my previous note to make sure that you’ve had her tested for internal parasites INCLUDING giardia, as well as doing a partial profile to make sure her liver and kidneys are up to par. You could also have a bile acids test done to rule out pancreatitis.
