Blizzard Warning
Yes, that’s right. Our pretty winter storm warning got upgraded today to a blizzard warning. If you haven’t looked at a map of the weather alerts in the US right now, go look at http://www.weather.gov. It’s got lots of pretty colors on it. That red color all over Iowa and through the Midwest – those are blizzard warnings. I don’t know about Iowa, but ours runs through midnight tomorrow night. As of the writing of this entry at 9:15 central time, there’s just one lone holdout of the major school districts in the area – and wouldn’t you know it – it’s the school district I attended while we were here. But I have no doubt that when I get up in the morning, they’ll have canceled classes. The question now is whether I’m headed to work tomorrow. I’m hoping they close, but I don’t know that they will be smart enough for that. Seriously, even the University is mostly shut down and that never happens. Right now, I doubt I’m headed to work. My mom’s going to probably work from home, so chances are I’ll be home regardless of whether work closes. At this point, the chances of us getting plowed out before noon are probably somewhere around 50-50. And with the wind getting stronger through the afternoon hours tomorrow, it likely won’t matter much. The snow’s so fluffy that the strong winds are expected to create ground blizzards, even if it’s not actually snowing any longer. The heaviest snow hasn’t even fallen yet and already there are some decent drifts in the yard, as Sammie discovered when we let the dogs out for the last time tonight. (And now as I continue this entry, that last holdout school has canceled classes for tomorrow). I’m hoping my office is smart enough to close in the wave of a blizzard warning, but there’s a sizable part of me that doesn’t think my office is quite that smart. Oh, and for those unaware of southern Wisconsin winter storms – we don’t see Blizzard warnings very often. In the 15 1/2 years we’ve been back in the Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin area, we’ve only ever been under a blizzard warning one other time – and that was nearly three years ago now. So it’s a pretty nasty situation outside right now and through late tomorrow as well.
I forgot to mention yesterday that I got the H1N1 vaccination while I was at my dr. appointment. My doctor told me it was now available to everyone 24 and younger and I fall into that category. Given that I can’t afford to take the time off for something like that (I’m going to want it should I get into law school and need to go scouting for apartments). So I figured I’d go ahead and get it. While my arm’s sore, it’s not as bad as it was with the regular flu shot back in September.
Alright, I’m headed off to bed. I’m getting up with the intention of going to work, in case all the weather guys are wrong (at this point, that’s not likely though).
