One Headlight

So this second job thing is turning out to be more difficult than I would have imagined. Not impossible, but it’s taking some time to adjust. And for reasons I didn’t even consider. Namely, I don’t have appropriate footwear to stand for 6 or 7 hours straight. Does anyone? I mean, do they make shoes that will stand up (har dee har har) to that sort of use so it doesn’t kill your feet or your back? Also, I seem to be stuck permanently on cashiering for now, which is okay and may change, but when it’s slow, it’s slow. At my regular job I at least have things to distract me. I keep wondering if it would be okay to pick up one of the craft magazines or something and flip through it, but I doubt it.

When I left today, I found a note on my windshield. “I bumped your taillight when turning into the parking space – I am so sorry. My number is 555-555-5555. -Bumped Intoyou. Pls call.” I walked to the driver’s taillight and didn’t see anything. I figured the lady had overreacted or something. Then I considered the fact that I have two taillights and walked to the passenger side. Bumped isn’t really the appropriate verb, I don’t think. Smashed my taillight and scraped my bumper and rear panel, yeah that fits better. It’s not as bad as that makes it sound though. It’s just cosmetic, I think. Knowing nothing whatsoever about cars, I don’t know if the bumpage to the rear panel meant any structural damage or anything. I haven’t called her yet as I wouldn’t even know what to say. Kyle suggested getting a quote for it and just having her pay for the repairs. Makes sense. I’m chicken shit to call her, because this is uncharted territory for me. She will receive a phone call about it, but at this point I don’t know if it will be from me, Kyle or me with Kyle listening and guiding me. It sounds pathetic, I know. But I know I’m the type of person that will be like, “Oh, it’s not a big deal” if she puts up any fight because I don’t really care about my taillight being a little smashed and my fender and rear panel being a bit scraped. I’ve already pretty much decided that I don’t want to ever sell Penelope – I hope she’ll stay with me for a very long time, so those sorts of things aren’t really a consideration for me. But then again, I did just get her two months ago so I’m a little miffed about that part of it.

Work is fine. Not much to say about it really. I’ve only used my discount once. I bought some favor bags for Honor’s wedding and a little tiny stamp set for me. The stamp set was originally $1.00, so you know that was pretty cool. I wish I had seen the clear acrylic stamps in the rack above the wooden and rubber stamps, but oh well. It kind of helps that I have no disposable cash whatsoever right now. I don’t think I’ll be using my discount again until mid-August or later, actually. Which sounds far away, but I guess it’s closer than that. Not that that matters, but whatever.

Kyle and I saw The Dark Knight last night. It was pretty awesome. I didn’t know two key things about two of the characters, so the movie unfolded somewhat surprisingly and differently for me than it did for Kyle who know those key things. That was interesting.

I’m kind of spacey right now. So perhaps I will just head to bed. That sounds like a fine idea to me.

If she puts up a fight, just threaten to call the police on her for leaving the scene of an accident. That may not even be true for a small thing like this, but it would probably scare her.

BTW, One Headlight is a terrific song. And I have been reading, just not been a good noter lately. Bad Zaphod.

Gah! The internets ate my note. Okay, basically, I agreed with Kyle. Get a quote or two, relay that information to Bumpy. If she resists, gently say that you will have to leave it to your insurance company, and will relay her information to them so they can deal with it. Most people don’t want to pony up the deductible just for a cosmetic accident. Like, if the repairs are only $500 or something, and your deductible is $500…why pay that and then have higher insurance? Anyway, I hope something gets figured out. If you don’t want to go that route, you can feel her out and if she’s resisting, get Kyle to phone. That time that woman side-swiped me, she got her husband to phone to intimidate me. Didn’t work on me, but who knows about Bumpy?

At Indigo the cashiers have duty elsewhere in the store, but in the CD/gift area near the cash. They tidy up/do work down there if there’s no one around. I don’t know if they have this sort of thing at Michael’s or not. I used to stand for nearly 8 hours straight in receiving at Indigo. I just went with cushioned shoes. I was also in the backa nd could wear sneakers (when not on the floor).

You can definitely get shoes that will stand up, but they won’t be cheap. Granted, shoes probably cost more here. I recommend checking out Keen Footwear.

Even with wonderful shoes, it will take your body time to get used to all that standing. Standing is hard. It puts a lot of pressure on your feet. If you are nervous, just have Kyle call. It’s worth getting her to pay for the repair, and worth making the repair now instead of letting it go.

There are shoes and/or inserts that make such claims; I don’t know how well they work. But I know they cost an arm and a leg, which could upset your balance. (Wow, that was an accidental double-pun.)

She’ll be easy to deal with, I bet. After all, she did leave you a note when she could have just left. Call her with quotes and let the insurance companies work it out – that’s what you’re paying them to do.

I just texted you before I started reading this. I was thinking I could come up for lunch (I don’t have the kids) and check out the damage. You may just need a tail light and little buffing to get out the scraps. Could just be a a few hundred dollars. I’d be happy to call if you need me to. CB,

I have a friend who is a nurse in A&E so is on her feet for 12 hours at a time. She says Crocs are the way to go in terms of footwear!
