My Thoughts On Smoking
If you smoke, you’re a moron.
That about encompasses it. At least, it does if you’re not willing to look beneath the surface at my reasoning. But yes, I do wholeheartedly believe that all smokers, regardless of age (or in some cases, especially because of,) race, gender, etc., are idiots for picking up the cigarettes.
Yet it’s in a paradoxical sense that I say smokers are idiots. Because I have a few semi-friends, (more than acquaintances, less than actual friend-friends, who I hang out with,) who are smokers, and they are, aside from the smoking, perfectly intelligent, kind, respectable people. So before I get jumped on for "judging these people unfairly," remember I said that.
My logic is simple. Smoking is a disgusting habit that will kill you. To date I know, either personally or from a distance, four people who have died because of smoking related cancer. George Harrison, Karen, my grandfather on my dad’s side, and a relative of Rob’s. (Hey, I said known from a distance.) And these are just the people I can think of off the top of my head.
People 35 and older I will give the excuse of ignorance to. They weren’t told from the time they were little kids how bad smoking was for them, how they shouldn’t do it, how it will cause cancer, etc. And by the time they started learning this stuff through their kids or whoever, they were already hooked. Yet it’s not impossible to quit. But I’ll comment on that later.
People under 35, they have no excuse. They are true idiots, morons, dumbasses, whatever name you wanna come up with if they decide to pick up a cigarette. Again, they might be perfectly nice, trustworthy, respectable, intelligent people outside of smoking, but as soon as they pick up that cigarette . . .
Because they have no excuse. They’ve been told from the start, from when they’re in kindergarten, first grade, how bad smoking is, that they shouldn’t do it, that it WILL KILL YOU. Yet they still start.
I mean, what the freakin’ Hell? What are these people thinking? Why would anyone want to do that to their throat, their lungs, their heart? And what about the people around them? What about any kids around them?? I mean, part of the reason childhood asthma and stuff has gone up is because people are still smoking around their kids from the time that they come home from the hopspital, more or less! That’s pathetic! Can’t a person put out a gicarette long enough to air out their clothes and play with their kid?
I wish that smoking could just be outlawed. But I know that’s not possible, because so many people would lose jobs, even though their jobs are basically killing who knows how many people per day. Plus, if smoking were actually outlawed, then we’d have an outbreak, much like prohibition, undoubtedly, with bootleg cigarettes and God only knows what.
I swear, people should just grow up, wise up, and quit. And for everyone who wants to tell me "Oh, you don’t know how hard it is," and all that, all I can say is, "Tough." The ones who started are the idiots who have to want to quit. And if you want to do something, if you really are determined to achieve it, then you can do it. I’m not gonna tell anyone that quitting smoking isn’t going to be hard. For some, I probably can’t even comprehend how hard it would be. But I know that it’s possible. My Nana, about a year after her husband died, stopped. She just put down her cigarette and never picked another one up.
And just so no one thinks I’m prejudiced against family members or those I hold in very high respect, though it kills me to say it, I think my Nana was an idiot for smoking, too. Though she had the excuse of ignorance. I also think the Beatles were idiots for smoking the way they did.
Okay, I have to drive somewhere, so I’ll come back later.
Bye.
agreed.

You can pretty much say the same thing about every other group (drinkers, the obese, etc.) that don’t have an optimally healthy lifestyle. I don’t really think people are idiots for consciously making a choice to smoke or eat trans fats or inject heroin or whatever, since even though they’re injuring their health in the long run, it’s a trade-off for the enjoyment they get from the activity.

And even though I quit smoking, I’ll still acknowledge that as unhealthy as they are that cigarettes can be pretty awesome at times. It’s not that it’s that it’s so hard to quit that people can’t do it, because quitting is pretty simple if someone wants to do it, but it’s just that smoking is so pleasurable that it honestly does seem like all the health effects are worth it.

The heroin thing was just kind of a joke. Smoking only burns like, the first time or so. It isn’t really something people have to get “used to”. Each subsequent one is way better. Not that I’m advocating that you try again or anything. Smoking can be done in moderation, also. Yeah, it has no health benefits, but neither do a lot of other things that people enjoy doing.

But mostly my point was that no one would ever call a really fat person a moron, even though that weight-related disorders are up there with smoking as the leading causes of preventable death. Both groups make bad lifestyle choices. But, smokers know what they’re signing up for, even more so than the obese probably, and they’re okay with it. Making bad choices is not the same thing as ignorance.

I agree. I can’t stand smokers. I can accept if they don’t care about what they are doing to themselves, but when they smoke around other people, they are hurting them as well! And that is just rude and disrespectful to fellow human beings.

I’m with you. Personally, I don’t care if they hurt themseslves smoking, though. It’s the idiots at little league practice and games and crowding the entrances to buildings that are hurting my children and dont’ give a crap that they do it. I want to kick their teeth in.

and another bit of food for thought, lol. People jump all over lawsuits and immediately stop taking a medication when they figure out it has possible side effects that are harmful that weren’t advertised at all. People refuse to take that medication. However, the side effects of smoking are more than just possible and people do it anyway.

not to mention that most smokers I know think nothing of littering… which is really uncool… how attractive is it to see fiberglass cigarette filters all over sidewalks, streets, and grass….
