My Hundred Dollars In Quarters

Yeah, it’s really sad. Back in January, I decided that since I had a lot more quarters than anything else in my piggy bank, I would separate the coins and just keep saving up the quarters till I had a hundred dollars in quarters. And no, I couldn’t just go to a store, and say, “Here’s a twenty, can I have this in quarters?” I had to collect them up just from the change I got back from when I bought something. Or if I had dimes and nickels and pennies, and counted them, and traded them in. But I only did eight bucks worth for that, towards the end. But as of yesterday, had saved, in about three months, one hundred dollars and twenty five cents, in quarters. I’ve decided now that I’m going to do that same thing–a hundred dollars–for singles, and then for fives, and just see how long it takes me. I know this entire thing probably sounds really, really sad, and even to me it does. But I also know the reason behind it. I’m horrible at saving money. If I have money in my wallet, I must find something to buy. It’s as simple as that. I can’t save money. If it’s in the bank, “hey, automatic reserve!” More money to spend, you know? (Though that kind of defeats the purpose of a savings account.)

Anyway, though, there was only once when I saved up a substantial amount of money. For how old I was, then anyway. See, when I was ten and in fifth grade, I really, really wanted a ferret. I thought that they were the cutest animals, and loved everything that I read about them. Only problem? They’re about a hundred dollars each. Sometimes more, depending on the petshop. And my mom was NOT willing to spend that much on a pet, especially not for a ten year old. So, she told me I could have one if I saved up the hundred dollars for it myself. I don’t think she thought I could do it. I mean, I had trouble saving up twenty dollars to buy a new Barbie doll! Well, I took her seriously, and decided that I wasn’t going to spend a cent until I saved up enough to buy my ferret. (And considering I only got a three dollar allowance at that point, that’s pretty good!) Well, once I started saving it got easier and easier. Any money that I got, I just put aside in this really old, falling apart wallet that I used to have. (I think I still have it, but I’m not sure. I wish I did, cuz I loved that thing.)

Anyway, I saved even beyond my expectations. I didn’t count it for awhile, so I’m not sure exactly how much I saved up, but I had close to TWO hundred when I was done. But by then it had been decided that my aunt and my (then) year and a half old cousin would be moving in with us, and my mo decided that having a year and a half old baby there was not the best circumstance to get a ferret under. So, it was decided that I’d have to waiot until they moved out. I should have just kept saving, because if I had, God only knows how much money I could have gotten together. But instead, I started taking a twenty out of my stash each time Mom and I went to a store, and I’d buy a whole bunch of stuff, or a new doll, or something. I did that for a couple of weeks, and when I counted it again, I’d gone down to about eighty.

So, long story short, I’m saving all this up because I want to prove to myself I can do it. Not to mention it gives me three hundred extra dollars when I’m done with all three. And that’s always good.

Congrats on the $100 in quarters. And good luck on your next goals. I always use my debit card when I spend so I never get change back. 🙁 [Eric’s Girl]

Congratulations on saving money. I used to be really bad at managing money, but now I’ve actually saved up over 200 dollars from working. I have saved more, but I lent money to Kenny. Plus I’m trying to save money to eventually move out of this madhouse. *lol* [SolarEclipse]

I like the saving quarter idea, my son is doing that right now. He says he has 100 quarters so far. It’s a good way to save money. Good Job! [Mousekawhitz]
