Essay For A Friend
Hey. Okay, I helped revise this for lost=one, so I hope he likes this. It was in an E-mail, so I’m just copying over the E-mail.
Hey. It occurs to me I have no idea what your name is.
The nosebleed seats. One thinks about them when at a football game, or a concert, not when in a college classroom. But to the sixteen-hundredth student in Psychology 101, Professor James B. Mass must look like little more than the colorful dot-people seen on the ground from the seat in an airplane.
At first, the very notion of having a class with almost as many students in it as my entire high school seemed rather daunting, and very ridiculous. Furthermore, that the splash of color called a teacher was a respected figure in psychology, with a best selling book in print, made it hard to believe that he would care about the individual students’ needs, let alone assuring that said students retained anything taught.
Therefore, when I received a Fed Ex box from Cornell, I was surprised, but figured that I had been sent an application or information about the school. After my curious hands pried open the well-sealed box, a book, a video, and a journal fell out. I spread them out on my bed, and picked up the book. The title read: Power Sleep: the Revolutionary Program that Prepares Your Mind for Peak Performance. I skimmed through the pages, still mystified as to how this package came to rest on my doorstep. Watching the pages flip by one last time, my eye caught a glimpse of the picture on the inside back cover. Opening the book wider, I gazed at the smiling man staring back. My eyes fell to the name below, and I made a startling connection. The professor at Cornell, James Mass, had actually replied to the letter I had written. I reached for the box, and looked in. I read the included letter, in which Professor Mass had addressed all of my questions.
Two weeks earlier, as part of an assignment for Psychology 1, I had sent him a letter, questioing how sleep and dfreams can affect an individual, and requestng information on research he had done. This box, with the letter, book, video, and journal, was my response. A well-renowned expert, with multiple published books, as well as a class of over a thousand students, had taken the time to answer me, a high school student, interested in psychology and Cornell. Not only that, but he included some of his works, along with a personalized letter, answering all my questions. If this man was willing to take the time to respond to me, someone who he owed no obligation whatsoever, who never even laid eyes on him as a colorful lecturing blob in the front of a huge classroom, it convinces me that he is worthy of teaching such an immenes number of students, and that he tries to help each one.
With this knowledge behind me, as well as confirmation from others, it became clear to me that the teachers of Cornell are dedicated to making the learning process and active on, where students are engaged in activities that stretch their minds to dimensions and horizons they never knew existed. Or perhaps, just never thought they could reach.
Numerous other factors add to why Cornell is my first choice school, but the dedication of the teachers falls to number one. I am applying there so that I, too, may sit with sixteen hundred other students and learn from this renowned and dedicated teacher, even if I do get a nosebleed seat.Okay, that’s it. I liked reading this. You really sound eager to go to this school, and I hope you do get in. It’s always good when you have a dedicated teacher like that, because they inspire the students to do better. Anyway, I hope you like what revisions I’ve done, and I hope you do well on this. Bye. 🙂 🙂 :)Kate.
