Dancing Through Life? (Fanfic)
Fiyero stepped away from Boq. “So now you see,” he muttered.
“But that means she– and I– and we– No! I won’t believe it. She was evil and I swear, I’m going to kill her off properly this time! Without ether of you.” Suddenly, another look of realization crossed his face. “Wait a minute . . . You were on her side from the beginning. You must have warned her, and she used some sort of spell that made the water ineffective.”
He rushed towards the door of the stables and had mounted a horse before Fiyero or Dorothy could stop him. “Well, you won’t be able to warn her this time!” He let out an evil, maniacal laugh and galloped away into the night.
Fiyero sighed, slumping over. “We have to catch up to him somehow.”
“Should we take two other horses?”
“What about the lion?”
“He’ll be all right. And we need to catch up with Boq.”
Fiyero glanced in the direction Boq had left. “Okay, let’s do it. For Elphaba.”
“For Elphaba,” Dorothy echoed.
They both climbed onto different horses, Dorothy on a blue one, Fiyero on a yellow one, and set off.
They glloped through the night, away from the yellow brick road, and through a winding trail in the back woods that Fiyero had discovered.
“When did you find this trail? Dorothy asked at one point.
“Long ago, before Elphaba was known as the witch of the West. It was how I once got to Munchkinland so fast to help save her from the Wizard. Unfortunately, that was also the day I was captured.”
“Oh, Fiyero . . .”
He slowed his horse and led them carefully through some underbrush and then over a creek. “Don’t worry about me. I knew what I was doing. I never felt it right that everyone was so against her. Glinda, the one who claimed to be her ‘best friend’ wouldn’t even help. She was too concerned with being popular with the citizens of Oz.”
“She does seem more . . . flaky? than last time.”
“Believe me, this was nothig compared to the old Shiz days. I admit, I fell for her at first because, let’s face it, she is beautiful. But then, after talking to Elphaba and finding out that she has a mind, and seriously thought about things, I started questioning where I was going and what I was doing in life. All I really did was dance through. She . . . didn’t.”
“So, in essence, you chose brains over beauty?”
“Elphaba is beautiful in her own ways. But I suppose you could put it that way.” He pulled back on his horse’s reins, and they both stopped. “Take a look at that.”
Dorothy looked up. They were at the witch’s castle. Dawn was breaking and the sun was coming up, shining light onto the stones. It was truly a breathtaking image.
“Oh . . . That’s beautiful . . .”
“Yes . . .”
Finally, they tore their eyes away and glanced around. Boq’s horse was at the edge of the woods, eating some shrubbery.
“He’s here,” they said in unison, their eyes going back to the castle. Suddenly, they heard a scream.
