Behind The Smiles
After not having a voice on Tuesday and Wednesday, I’m happy to say that I’m back. I can talk, so, yay.
I’m not sure why I decided to name this one ‘Behind the Smiles,’ but I have. I suppose it’s because, as much as I joke about talking so much, I enjoy peace and quiet. I’m not that loud of a person. But everyone’s so used to thinking of me that way.
I realize everyone has a different face, so to speak, that they show to the world, as opposed to who they are in private. And everyone has misconceptions about others that they either don’t know are misconceptions, or don’t want to know. I wonder, though. What do those misconceptions cost others? I don’t even know that they’ve cost me anything. But I wonder . . .
Melanie’s called talking online impersonal. Sometimes, I can agree, because it’s not like you’re seeing who you’re talking to. You can’t read an expression, tell a feeling because of an inflection in their tone, or be sarcastic or joking, unless you state that you’re being sarcastic or joking. Yet, sometimes, I think that there’s nothing more personal than talking in an IM. I’ve had some of the most private conversation with people over IM. Ryan and I have had conversations online we never would have had in person. And it was because we couldn’t see one another’s faces. The same goes for other people I know. It was just easier for them to tell me something online, because that way, they weren’t seeing the reaction.
Maybe IM’s give people a place to hide. I mean, assuming it’s not hurting anyone, you can be anyone you want online. I could be a model-thin, tall, gorgeous brunette if I wanted, as far as anyone was concerned. (Not thin, but not fat, five two, and I am a brunette, who went blond temporarily.)
I don’t remember where I’ve heard the expression Behind the Smiles. It might be a song. Or a poem. Or maybe it’s someone else’s diary. I don’t know. I just find it interesting, though, because it suggests two faces. One, a smiling face shown to the world, and then a private one, known only to special people, that this person has pain, just like everyone else.
Okay, that’s about as much serious stuff as I can muster right now. People, leave me notes!!!
–Notes–
It’s like that Billy Joel song, “Strangers” i think. The one about everyone wears a mask.
Anyway, I picked Idaho mainly because you already stole NJ. Also, I like potatoes.

random note spree! i’ve often thought about the same things myself. it’s easier for me to argue w/ my boyfriend online because if i’m in front of him i’ll just want to drop the whole thing. this kind of enables me to “stay mad” haha. have a good one!*

Behind the Smiles is the diary name of one of my friends on here. She leaves me notes often in my diary..so you might have seen the name there. Just a thought. Anyway, this was a really good entry. [SolarEclipse]
