We’re writin’ it!

Thank God!  And thank you all, dear fellow OD mates, who showered me with your well wishes.  The power of prayer, the power of belief, the power of support – these tell me, again, that the word "impossible" is usually just a state of mind.

I’m not going to describe the counting process as it’s quite messy.  I just want to state my next goal:

My 20-strong legion of pen-wielding little warriors will storm the school with a tempest of English literacy it has never seen before!

And I REFUSE to listen to my colleague, who cautioned that my club might end up like Mr S’s French Club last year, which saw the number of student participants dwindling from 15 to 0 due to lack of interest.  I am NOT Mr S.

First off, CONGRATS and YES i kneeeeeeeeeeeeeew u can do it!!! *fireworks celebration* Okay right away I can see why the French Club project didn’t work. But first i have to suppose that your school doesn’t offer French as a regular subject (i hope i’m not wrong). Now, French is a DIFFICULT language to learn, and learning a language is somewhat a PASSIVE activity. High school kids are active

teenagers, after a hard day’s rote learning and drilling for exams, who would want to study ANOTHER language again, all from scratch, when they have more ‘fun’ extra curricular activities to choose from, such as all those sport clubs (especially for boys), drama, dance, music, debating club etc. All these are ‘active’ activities because students can really participant in them, like playing sports,

dancing, singing, debating, acting, or creating drama. They’re different from normal school work so it’s more refreshing and fun to the students. No wonder the French Club at your school work didn’t work! It might have worked if it’s a JAPANESE club tho, i think, b/c of the HK ppl’s obsession of Japanese culture. Well in my high school we also had a French Club and it’s been there for a long long

time… it was successfuly probably b/c French is a regular subject at my high school (we can choose between Chinese and French), so at least there’s some direct relation. Yes, don’t listen to your colleagues, you’re NOT Mr S, and you’re NOT doing a French Club. So it’s different. U know i’m very sure many students like to write, perhaps they may be the more ‘introvert’ or ‘quiet’ bunch

(compared to the other joiners) but once u have a means/club for them to let out their talents… they will come knocking at your door. And creative writing IS an active activity. Wow. i’m writing essays again here, if i were your student, i’d no doubt volunteer to be the president of your writing club… LOL Wish u all the success.. and make your colleagues’ eyeglasses drop to pieces!! 🙂
