Creative Writing Club?

I’ve had enough of this Badminton Club crap.  I swear this will be the last year I’m in charge of the club.

I’m the advisor for the Badminton Club of my school.  I book the Hall on almost every Thursday throughout the school year, basically a year in advance.  That should mean we get to play badminton quite often, right?  Wrong, way wrong.  We can’t even play 8 times throughout the whole year, which is supposedly the minimum number of sessions (school policy).  How come?  Well, whenever Thursday approaches, people come and tell me one of the following:

"Sorry, I know you’ve booked the Hall, but the public exam is in progress and no one is allowed to use the Hall.  You’re just a club, so you can always play next time, can’t you?"

"Sorry, I know you’ve booked the Hall, but I’ve just organized a talk for Form 3 so you’ll have to give it to me.  You’re just a club, so you can always play next time, can’t you?"

"Sorry, I know you’ve booked the Hall, but it’s the interschool competition season right now and my team needs to practise.  You’re just a club, so you can always play next time, can’t you?"

"Sorry, I know you’ve booked the Hall, but no staff is available to help you clear the desks and chairs right now.  You’re just a club, so you can always play next time, can’t you?"

"Sorry, I know you’ve booked the Hall, but the school exam is coming in two weeks and you should not let the students play.  You’re just a club, so you can always play next time, can’t you?"

"Sorry, I know you’ve booked the Hall, but you have a meeting this afternoon, which means you can’t be there to supervise the kids, right?  Then you cannot have this badminton session, I’m sorry.  You’re just a club, so you can always play next time, can’t you?"

Fine, take everything away from me if you want, but how dare you criticise me for not reaching my "quota" of 8 sessions?  You think I don’t want to let the kids play?

And for your information, no other day is available to me coz other school teams have totally monopolized the Hall on other days.  How about Saturday?  Come on, you think the kids would come and play?  Mind you, if they don’t show up, I need to contact each of them, asking them why they didn’t come, and if their reasons aren’t good enough, I have to give them a warning letter to be signed by their parents.  Totally troublesone.  How about Sunday?  You kidding me?  I do have a life, excuse me.  How about booking those outside courts run by the Leisure and Cultural Dept?  Erm…do you think I can book enough courts for 24 people every time?  And don’t forget I’ve to issue parent’s letters for each kid if I’m taking them outside.

No, closing the club is the only way to go.  I give up.  Sorry.

But I do want to do something else.  I want to start a Creative Writing Club next year.  I’ve never done this before, and I wasn’t an English or Literature major or anything like that, but I’m interested.  I don’t think I’m very creative myself, but I can still encourage my students to be creative, right?  I want to give it a try.

But how do I do it?  Does anyone have any suggestions?  I must say, at the present moment, the term "creative writing" is VERY foreign to students in my school…

First, i must say this entry is hilarious.. i enjoyed reading it so much!! :-DDDDDD The idea of a Creative Writing Club is great!!! but how to put it into practice needs a little bit of thought. Are u gonna focus on just English writing? i thought it would be wonderful if Chinese is included but that may mean much more workload too… how about organize an English writing competition?

^^

March 28, 2006

Or simply call for entries submission and the best 20 will be included into a school publication- eg., ‘Students’ Voices of XXXX school’… Or invite some budding creative writers to give a talk/workshop to students who’re interested? WOww… i’m getting all excited!!! we didn’t have such kind of club in my high school, so it will be really great if there is one… oh wait, u’re the teacher..

March 28, 2006

not me… and i have nothing to do with it… i mustn’t get carried away.. hahaha. but of course, the most important thing is, the availability of and the success rate of booking a VENUE… hahah… 😛

March 28, 2006

How about dead poet society? It is easy to learn from classics, instead of asking them to create something.

March 28, 2006

haha. I really like the idea of dead poet societ, do you look like robin williams?

March 28, 2006

Sorry, I know you’ve booked the Hall, but didn’t you know the Hall never existed? This will be the very last of our friendly reminder…there was never a Hall. ^_^

March 28, 2006

*glances above* Bunnypanda is so funny.. hee hee.. he’s into dead poets society alright while Debauchee, matrix ^^

That is really annoying that they would have a ‘quota’ that can’t be met.

March 28, 2006

gee that I would be fed up with all of that too. Good luck on your new club.. it sounds like it may be very interesting!

March 28, 2006

Aww… it’s really upsetting when things like this happen right? hm, Creative Writing Club would be nice. I was attracted to your title just now due to immense familiarity. 😛 I was from the Chinese Creative Writing Club for 4 years in secondary (high) school. Aye, it’s not in English but still, similar concepts… Hehe, I’d think it’d be a good way to expose students to learn eng the fun way!

March 28, 2006

Sigh. that’s hilarious. But this happens to my school as well, the PE teacher needs to book the gym for his P.E lesson, isn’t that ridiculous??? Creative writing…sounds interesting, but not sure if the children would like it. ^^”

I really like your idea…^______^

March 28, 2006

i actually took a class about teaching creative writing…. =) define what you want your students to accomplish first. Creative writing could be a little advance to some students; so I’d say execute your plan gradually. and maybe communicate the idea with your students more to get feedback from them first. =)

March 28, 2006

hahaha….for you hilarious entry…Too bad you have to quit. hahaha…for Mag L….looks like she is very excited about your new idea and having fun in your notes. Sorry, don’t look at me. I can’t be of any help. I have no idea how to start a club of any kind. Except, may be a club sandwich…hahaha…

March 28, 2006

creative writing…? i think if you can write what you think without any restriction, such as grading scheme, social morality…, every articles will be creative you have to persuade your students to give up some outdated writing norms, um… no concrete ideas… but i did join a writing club… not many people were insterested in it… hope you would do a good job!

am touched by your words “But I do want to do something else.” It sounds to me that you are so hearty and full of passion for making a different world in this education field. That means alot, especially against the chaotic situation of Hong Kong education reform nowadays. Thank you so much! (Just want to give a grace saying to you! ^^)

and for the creative writing course, guess what the first idea that comes into my mind? It’s the “six thinking hats” perhaps you may try to accomplish your course with this idea. let the childred imagine that they are now having “black” “blue” or “red” hat and ask them to write down their thoughts towards “depression” “brightness” or “passion” and “life”. sure, they are all just a suggestion.

and may I wish you all the best your works in hands and the preparation of the course! btw, I am fine, I suppose, and the one I talked about has not betrayed me (I suppose also). It is just too complicated the reality is for he and I are nothing extraordinary people.

yet, really thanks for your words ^^ because of your “you raise me up”, I pick up some hymns to sing and it helps me to turn my clock back to tranquilo. thank you! gelbearmee

RYN…haha…How about a writing club that name “Club Sandwich”. That’s creative, isn’t it? And everyone would be given a club sandwich to eat before the writing begins. Now that would certainly attracts students to join and get they brains working…LOL.

March 29, 2006

hmmmmm…….. no wonder you’re so frustrated~ ^^ but hohoho~~ i’d be interested in joiningthe CWC~~~^^ but won’t you still have to book some place some time and have some gatherings regularly? wouldn’t you encounter the same problem…?? O.O best of luck for your Creative Writing Club~~~

Creative Writing Club, interesting, but will there be enough students having interest on it as well? People Power is important for organizing an ECA. re: Probably not, that’s so many. Secretly yes, if I am mad again.

March 29, 2006

Wow there are great ideas in the notes left by different diarists… and your note list just gets longer an longer too… 🙂
