Blueberry blues
I’m not a fruit lover. I only eat them because they’re supposed to be good for our health. If I had to choose my favourite fruit, I’d choose one because of its sentimental value. For this, I have two favourites: apples and blueberries.
When I was in Vancouver we used to have a really big apple tree in the middle of our backyard. Every summer to fall the tree would sprout thousands (yes, thousands) of green apples. It’s always my job to mow the grass and pick up the fallen apples, which were almost certainly rotten or damaged. It’s not a romantic sight, seeing our backyard full of rotten apples. Anyway, out of the 0.1% that were edible, my mom would bake apple pies for us. Unfortunately it’s not that delicious (blame the apples, not my mom), so we would give away the pies to our neighbours, who were too polite to refuse our gifts. Forget the saying "¤v©Ò¤£±ý¡A¤Å¬I©ó¤H" ("Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire").
Still, I miss the apples, especially the tree.
The blueberries were a different story. We got them from our neighbour’s blueberry bush, which overgrew and extended a few branches in our backyard. It’s funny how they said they didn’t bother trimming their bush, and that we could freely pick the blueberries that grew on our side. Maybe this made the blueberries more special, because we’re always hoping that our neighbour wouldn’t change their mind and start trimming the bush. Our harvests were meager, probably because our neighbour didn’t take good care of the bush. But there’s this one year which yielded an abundance of blueberries, and my mom, being adventurous in cooking, made something she’s never done before – blueberry muffins. Their aroma still lingers to this day, in my mind.
Living in Hong Kong, I find it impossible to get good blueberries at a decent price. $30 for a small box, and it isn’t even fresh. I like putting dried blueberries in my cereal, but they’re just not the same thing.
I miss the blueberries dearly.

Wow! my grandparents also tried to grow apples and oranges in their US backyard too, but they failed. But instead, they succeeded in growing all kinds of vegetables such as ¥V¥Ê, ªãµæ, ³q¤ßµæ, ¤j»[, Í´Ó} etc… Blueberries have a royal look to me, maybe also because they’re expensive. 🙂 My fav ‘berry’ is strawberry though. that said, blueberry is probably my second fav. 🙂

we dont get fresh blueberries here either, so whenever I make muffins, I always use the frozen ones. the apples in the supermarkets here dont taste good because they’re all export quality. I’ve heard the organic ones are really good .

I have the Emi Fujita’s CD too…I like her soft voice. 🙂 And I love blueberries too!! That’s my favorite fruit!! It is heaven when you savor those sweet ones. Too bad they are so experience. Otherwise, I wouldn’t mind having them every day. Your blueberries talk makes me dying for them right now…
