I’ve written this in Stephen Ho’s diary, I’ll post it again here: I’m probably going to sound like a snob, but I think people like us who have our feet in two or three cultures at the same time are more likely to spot follies in pure nationalism/ethnic-centralism/cultural superiority complex. It forces us to contantly question our own and other people’s basic assumptions, (cont’d)

(cont’d), and prevents us from accepting anything as a given. Therefore, we are a superior people. *ahem* I think the language, like ethnic food or clothing, is more of a cultural artifact, rather than a culture. I think of a culture as a set of behavioural and cognitive norms. I don’t doubt that a lot of HKers, even if they speak broken English, are “bananas” at heart.

May 9, 2006

btw, were your colleagues asking you the percentage of contemporary Chinese you understand? Whenever I read Chinese newspapers, I would be surprised by the number of slangs that have sprung up. Also, “¬°¤°»ò³ºµM¦³¾Ç¥Í»¡§Úªº¼sªF¸Ü»¡±o¤£¥¿¡H” – Haha, join the club.

I think people judge you from your education background and the fluency of your spoken English. I was born in HK, raised in HK and only spent few years in overseas to finish my undergraduate degree. However, most of my students are very curious and kepe asking me, ‘Miss Heidi, are you an American?’ or “Are you a Canadian?’ And they reckon I can neither read or speak chinese(mandarin). >.<

May 9, 2006

Well, at least I’m better than my sister, because people will talk to her in English and keep asking what’s her ‘nationality’ as she looks like a mix! =p
