Therefore, we are a superior people. *ahem* I think the language, like ethnic food or clothing, is more of a cultural artifact, rather than a culture. I think of a culture as a set of behavioural and cognitive norms. I don’t doubt that a lot of HKers, even if they speak broken English, are “bananas” at heart.

btw, were your colleagues asking you the percentage of contemporary Chinese you understand? Whenever I read Chinese newspapers, I would be surprised by the number of slangs that have sprung up. Also, “¬°¤°»ò³ºµM¦³¾Ç¥Í»¡§Úªº¼sªF¸Ü»¡±o¤£¥¿¡H” – Haha, join the club.

I think people judge you from your education background and the fluency of your spoken English. I was born in HK, raised in HK and only spent few years in overseas to finish my undergraduate degree. However, most of my students are very curious and kepe asking me, ‘Miss Heidi, are you an American?’ or “Are you a Canadian?’ And they reckon I can neither read or speak chinese(mandarin). >.<

Well, at least I’m better than my sister, because people will talk to her in English and keep asking what’s her ‘nationality’ as she looks like a mix! =p

re: yeah….the musical was produced, choreographed and directed by the staff of the school. Every song and every lyric were written by the staff and sung by our students. The cast is made up of our entire student population of 819, from kindergarten to Primary 6. What I liked most about the musical was the songs. =p

How come I miss this entry! I have the same same feeling as you have, almost same background. Now you know my Chinese. hehehe.. we should proud of ourselves. Tell you what, I’m writing a long story named “War of the worlds” The name is familiar to you right ? but what I’m saying is the war that I’m fighting is the world around me, now is us. :o)

You should be proud of yourself, it is not easy to master two different languages.
