Social Work

So school is in full swing and already I feel overwhelmed. I was thinking of double majoring in Sociology and Social Work so that would put me in school for another year, or so I thought.  I talked to the social work advisor today and she said that it would take me another year and a half to major in social work, so it wouldn’t be worth it. This depressed me somewhat. She seemed like she was really busy and basically pushed me out of the door with an application for a masters. So I guess my next course of action is to get my major in Sociology and my minor in Psychology and just go this year and half of next. I could always go on to get my masters. The truth of the matter is that I don’t know if I’d want to get it from here or not. I guess I will just take things as they go.

In other news I’ve been working on my social life a bit. I find myself really busy which is nice. I like to keep busy. Yesterday I basically spent most of my day at school. I had a meeting at 6:30 for Big Brother’s Big Sister’s, I’m trying to get as much volunteer experience as I can. So while I was waiting for that I spent the rest of the time studying. I really want to get my GPA up. It’s only a 2.76, if I want to get into the masters program the minimum requirement is 2.75. I really hope that I can get through this semester…

Very rewarding studies/careers I think – if you have the patience for it. Often very tough stuff to deal with you know.

Ryn: Glad to hear it. I’ve known social workers who burn out very quickly. Counseling is mo betta for sure. My Master’s is in counseling and I’ve never regretted it.

GOOD for you! I admire how much passion and drive you have to beat the odds of saying ‘this is going to be hard’. That’s really cool how you are going to contribute to society. Can i ask how you decided you wanted to do that?

I’m sure whatever decision you come to on what to major, you’ll do well at it. At the same time, it was my understanding that having a masters in social work would be more beneficial for that line of work. I don’t know, though. Thought I heard that from someone at one point. Good luck in school, though…but once you get through, I’m sure you’ll find a rewarding career waiting for you.

Too bad about the Major issues. at least you are out of there soon-ish. I am glad to hear that your social life is looking up. I definately respect the volunteer work deal. Good luck on getting the GPA up. Viele Liebe

If you’re interested in social work, talk to “self-disclosure.” She’s your one-stop source for graduate information. 🙂 I’m glad you’re social-working on your social-life. Ugh, that’s a horrible joke, sorry. :/
