Yet another rescue
Noters Beware!! This is a “mean-note” free diary.
I work in Muskegon, MI, on a road called Apple Avenue. Apple Avenue is a very busy road. It’s not just a road. I am not sure how roads are classified, but it has 2 lanes of traffic going each direction with a turn lane in the middle. Lots of traffic at all times of day.
So when I was driving home last night after work, I almost had a heart attack because I almost ran over this:
It had to be close. I only saw it at the last minute. I quickly turned around in a parking lot and went back to where the turtle was. She was now only halfway across the road. But there was so much traffic, so all I could do was watch. She kept going and wound up in a westbound lane. I almost had a second heart attack as she almost got hit by a white car. But then there was a break in traffic, so I ran and grabbed her and put her in my car (which is where the above pic was taken.)
I didn’t know what kind she was so I was a little freaked out at first. But I brought her home to research it and get some pics. I put her in a big box for a while. She is an Eastern Box Turtle. They have a very strong homing instinct, so I hope she doesn’t try to return to Apple Ave. When you help them, you are supposed to release them in the direction they were originally going because of that homing instinct. So I found a nice section of woods to release her in near where I found her. Hopefully she’ll be safe.
She had pretty markings on her shell.
And look at that face~~~
This is her on her way in the woods:
So, after doing my good deed, I pulled back in front of my house, only to get severely cussed out by this:
All because I disturbed it’s breakfast at my bird feeder!
Did you count the rings on the shell to see how old it was? We used to have a LOT of box turtles in the woods around the house I grew up in, but year by year the population declined to the point that it became highly unusual to find even one. But are you sure it was a female? It has bright orange eyes but appears to have a flat plastron, the two best indicators of sex. Females havebrownish orange eyes and a flat plastron, while males have bright orange eyes and a curved plastron. Did the camera accentuate the eye color, perhaps?

You are so kind to “all creatures great and small.” The turtle is a beautiful thing to see and I’m so gald you saw it soon enough to conduct a rescue.

What a pretty turtle! And what a lucky turtle – I’m so glad you saved it, poor thing. Years ago my best friend and I were driving in Florida and a big turtle was right in the middle of the road. To my surprise, people were stopping all over the place to rescue it, so it was saved.
